Are they indeed? I have'nt heard anybody say it to me privately or otherwise. I am, of course, discounting his extended family who phoned local radio this morning.

This is the so called apology that he made in the local media this evening

"I fully accept that comments attributed to me by Limerick Leader reporter David Hurley were accurately recorded and I regret having made them in a way that did not accurately reflect my views.

It was not my intention to cause any offence to EU nationals who are legally entitled to live in Ireland and who have contributed much to this country. I apologise if I have done so and I unreservedly withdraw my initial remarks.

In my comments on foreign nationals receiving social welfare payments, I was specifically referring to those individuals who travel to Ireland with one the aim of taking advantage of our social welfare system.

I am conscious of the thousands of foreign nationals who are living and working in Limerick who have made our city their home.

I wish to acknowledge, as Mayor of Limerick, the huge contribution in an economic cultural and social sense and that these people have made to the city and my comments were in no way attributed to them.

My comments were also not in reference to foreign nationals who have become unemployed and are actively seeking work in Ireland.

I still am of the opinion and, so are others that have approached me in recent days, that there is abuse of the Irish social welfare system. But in seeking to highlight this I inadvertently caused offence to others, which I very much regret.

I hope this clarifies my statement and I will be making no further comment on the matter."

Well as far as I'm concerned, having 'some cop-on' includes standing up to the PC-brigade and their attack on free-speech. Fair play to the man. Fintan O'Toole - you are not the conscience of the Irish people.

His role as mayor is 'symbolic' . Its a non executive position , he represents 'the city' . He dosent have a mandate to embarrass us all . We didnt vote for him as mayor . That imo is why he should 'cop on' and show restraint . Anyway he has admitted he was wrong and apologized(kind of) , so we might as well give him a break.

Williewatch I've reported your contemptible post and hope you are banned. Shame on you. CS, he has as much of a mandate as Mayor as Cowen has as Taoiseach. He is a democratically-elected councillor. He has every right to say what he said and I support him. Long live free speech and down with the Dublin 4 PC-brigade.

    Some people have short memories.

Here is an example of this type of "free speech" led to many years ago in Limerick

Eamonn Fitzgerald's Rainy Day: The "Limerick Pogrom"

Leaders with an ignorance of history are dangerous, as they keep leading us into the same mistakes again & again.

Remember that "The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic"

This from the poster who has regularly compared the EU to the Third Reich and the USSR.

BTW, where are you going to be seeking asylum after December 1st?

Hmmm, you don't seem to think too much of my right to "free speech" & for the record I am a Limerick resident.

    Well that cleared up anyway!

I think a lot of people -not just in Limerick but across Ireland

    - would agree that there should be no place in Our Country for those who only come here to live on our backs

    - and out of our pockets!

The disgraceful image you posted that is why I reported you.Godwin's Law at its worst. Comparisons with the Limerick Pogrom are rubbish and you know it.

Marmurr1916, I never said the EU was the Third Reich or the USSR.

The pogrom was a great comparison . Where do you think this kind of talk leads ? Anyway the racist attacks that have taken place here in the last decade make the 'pogrom' look like a tea party.

Edit; I dont think the mayors comments were actually racist but they struck a chord with racists .Thats why I believe he shouldve shown some restraint.
