Pay cuts of 8-15% proposed for senior civil servants

    Irish Times
PAY CUTS of up to 15 per cent for senior civil servants are recommended in the latest report of the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector.

Given that the recent ESRI studies found the public pay premium was largest for low-medium paid : this should mean massive cuts on the way for them.

Furthermore, we found that by 2006 senior public service workers earned almost 8 per cent more than their private sector counterparts, while those in lower-level grades earned between 22 and 31 per cent more.

While I have every sympathy with low or average earners in the Public Sector, the rates for the higher grades are just mind-boggling. For instance, 4.5% of the Secretary/General's rate is the equivalent of the basic jobseekers allowance...

OK, I know, there are hundreds of thousands of jobseekers, but it's the principle of the thing. Does anyone know where to find out how many of which grade are in each dept, and who decides what the numbers of ppl in each grade there should be?

It's not the poverty that's intolerable, it's the injustice...

Higher paid should do their patriotic duty and accept 30% cuts over the next 5 years.

€150,000 down to €105,000 is more than enough of a salary in a recession.

Same with hospital consultants €250,000 to €175,000

I also recommend that BIFFO takes a salary of €1 for the next 3 years.

He has been earning €250,000 per annum for 5/10 years at this stage. He doesn`t need a salary. He brought us to where we are, so he would want to get his finger out.

All politicians should take a 50% pay cut vouched expences before they introduce public pay cuts and social welfare cuts. After all they led the country into the state its in. Junior civil servents only get E422.00 strarting pay, not much room for cuting their salary. However the higher civil servents are on over E100,000. No matter how badly they perform they are accountable but no demotation or drop in income unlike the private sector.

The revenue should examine all politicians expenses and tax on the clear profit they have made.

True. If the government is to claw back the tiniest scrap of moral authority mininsters and high earners in the PS have to be seen to take a leadership role by taking the deepest cuts.

I wouldn't hold your breath though seeing as they have been engaged in months of committee meetings about TD's accepting the stunningly radical measure that is vouched expenses.
