UK Car Scrappage scheme to be extended

The government is to extend its car scrappage scheme, the BBC understands.

The scheme, which started in May, gives consumers £2,000 off a new car if they trade in one at least 10 years old.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is set to announce the move, which has been called for by the car industry, in his Labour Party conference speech.

I am sure all the Del Boys are ecstatic, they have showrooms full of cars that they can't shift.

Scrappage scheme costs nothing and if it keeps a few employees in jobs in the Motor Industry for the next 12 months, then bring it on.

We don't really have a motor industry though that can be compared with the UK. We have people who sell cars, and good luck to them. They're not doing so well now. Garages conversly are doing really well, as people are having to keep their cars longer, get them repaired more often etc.

In the UK, Germany, France etc it makes a lot of sense to do. You have a car, you scrap it, you're more than likely to buy a Merc or a Renault, which helps a very important manufacturing area of the country. We don't have that element.

Just cut VRT instead, we're going to have to do it eventually anyway.

    disagree.
    false economy.
millions of euro flows to where the cars are made.

Someone from the motor trade here was saying on the radio that people are reluctant to buy a 09 reg car when other people are losing their jobs. I can understand why that would be a problem for him but I thought it was a good thing.

I think there's a generational shift that people don't see a new reg car as being as big a symbol as it was in the 80s. I wanted an Audit TT, so I bought an 08 one in the UK for about 35% cheaper than buying an 09 one in Ireland. People just aren't happy to spend a large amount of money on something that drops at least 15% the second you drive it out the dealer's gate.
