    When did Ireland become anti-Enterprise?

The improvement in this country over last 10 years was largely driven by lower taxes rewarding people for working & investing. Why have we suddenly become a nation calling for higher taxes & new tax bands? Have we learnt nothing from the 80s?

Tax rates may have been lower in recent years but the tax take increased significantly but look how it was wasted...

I am smart but I am risk averse. If 5 people of equal intelligence risked it all by setting up their own business, 3 would lose money, 1 do okay, and 1 make money.

If the incentive for a big after tax income wasn't there why take the risk?

You and I can see that , but the unions think it was them sitting on government boards that caused the boom ... and Cowen thinks that sitting the unions down and buying them off was good management of the economny....

So once the government finances when bust the unions refused to take a smaller piece of the pie...the unions reverted to type and called for highter taxes to maintain thier lifestyles...

Look at England in the 70's for a comparsion...

I got a message today from a political party in connection with Spirit of Ireland, it said in essence that they agreed that the best way of cutting the social welfare budget was to create more jobs.

    Perhaps all is not lost.

If they are smart, and if the social climate was enterprise aware, the three that lost money the first time would learn their lesson and two would make money the second time.

I don't earn a high income but working for small Irish company with almost all customers outside this country I can see that the owners are entitled to reward for their investment.

I abhore tax exiles & the way some are greeted in this country but that is different to taxing this country back into the stone age.

It depends if the jobs are in the private sector or public sector?

In secondary school , I was taught that one of the benifits of semi state companies was that they could hire staff in down turns ....however, Cowen and Ahern filled our Public sector to capacity so there is no scope for hiring people in the public sector...
If they had managed the country better we could hire those people now...

To answer the question 'When did Ireland become anti-Enterprise?'
It happened about 10 years ago at the beginning of the property boom when building houses was confused with 'Enterprise'.
Before that time building houses or property was not considered to be part of an 'entreprise culture' or 'entrepreneurship'

We became anti-Enterprise during Bertie period was Taoiseach as he gave the Unions everything they wanted and then claimed this was good for the economy. Cowen has largely carried that on.

The Unions need to be taken on, as they were in Britain in the 80s. However there is still no sign that Fianna Fail are prepared to do that.

Right now people are calling for higher taxes because they don’t want spending cuts. However even at that we probably need both as the government have ********************ed up our finances by so much and taking on more and more debt leads to other problems down the line.

It is very easy to waste money that belongs to someone else.
