Fair play to them. Be interesting to see what sort of support these workers get from the left organisations.

The owners have strong Fianna Fail connections and this could turn into quite a battle.

Imagine putting your loyal workforce through this just before Christmas

Not only should the bar be picketted.. it should be boycotted. Hit them where it hurts, especially coming up to Christmas.

    This is disgraceful

There were a lot of people on this website saying that all this displacement stuff was a figment of our imagination and wanting proof of it. Where are they now?

PS Didn't the Submarine change hands for big money (I think E8-10million) in the last year?

Its one of the biggest pubs in the country (its like the Albert Hall) sold for 12million they were looking for 15. The shopping centre attached made 35million.

Well, you seem to have answered your own query. The bar was sold in May, tending to indicate that the former owners weren't making enough money to make it worth their while.

There was probably a six-month period of calm, either negotiated into the sale or undertaken by the new owners to take stock of the business, and now they're setting about making the changes that they deem necessary to ensure the business remains viable.

This is not an Irish Ferries situation. The owners can't pay below minimum wage to the new staff, and so they're not breaking the law. Yeah, it's crappy timing, in the run up to Christmas, but unionised bar staff do tend to demand quite astounding rates of pay.

I do think it'll come back to bite them, though. Firstly, there will be negative publicity and the loss of good will which this story will cause. Also, workers willing to work in a bar like that for minimum wage are likely to be less experienced and to stay put in the job for less time, and so revenue will probably fall (at least in the short term).

At the risk of sounding callous, this stuff happens all the time. People try to get the job done for the lowest price possible. You're just kicking up a fuss about it because you presume that they'll be replaced by immigrant labour. Nowhere in the article does it say that this is the case.
Heavy words are so lightly thrown.

in a self-delusional, self-flattering state of denial, as usual!
