Council won't say who they bought €100m houses off!

    On RTE Drivetime now

Fingal Council have 552 affordable houses the can't sell. 440 of them were bought from developers at the end of 2007 at a cost of €100m.

According to Fergal Keane, Fingal have refused to say who they bought the houses off.

Are they not legally obliged to purchase these units? This would explain their purchase at a time when it was obvious the property bubble was bursting. The AH scheme will be remembered as one of the most scandalous wastes of public money.

Part V initially required developers to sell 20% of new housing to Councils. However an amemdment by Martin Cullen in 2002 made this optional. During the bubble years councils routinely waived the 20% requirement and very little housing was acquired. However once the bubble burst developers began using it to offload properties that they couldn't otherwise sell.

However the prices that some Councils are paying for houses outside of Part V is a bigger scandal. many brown paper envelopes are being passed. The Sunday World did a piece recenly on Councillors who were selling their houses to their own councils for much more than they were worth. Councils should be immediatly banned from buying houses from private developers and private individuals due to the endemic corruption in this practice

Another day, another megamillions property-related scam brought to you by Fianna Fáil, for your children and grandchildren to pay for for decades and decades to come.

Now we know why they're so desperate to cling on to power.

No cash for that kid's desperately needed operation (I think I heard her mother say she weighs 2 stone something), but loads of cash for developers.

Thank you Dev, CJH, Ahern, Cowen.

    Depressing, isn't it?

What's worse is the way most people refuse to even countenance the corruption. It is simply not to be mentioned or acknowledged in any way. To admit that it exists would mean that something would have to be done about it, and that would spoil the party.

When I was a child I believed most people were generally kind and decent and ethical. Sadly these days I'm forced to conclude that most people are in fact irredeemably corrupt, and will tear your arm off if you offer them a slice of the corruption pie.

90% of the population are either benefiting from a scam, believe they are benefiting from a scam, or desperately trying to get on the inside track so they can jump aboard a scam.

I've traveled in African countries that were cleaner than this sewer.

Is Fingal not run by Labour?

Aye I agree with that, there are I would say about 20% of people in this country honest and fair, about 50% who are not corrupt but will benefit from it so will keep the head down and ignore reality, then you have about 30% of the population who are corrupt scum, and will do anything to get what they want, and with this look all around you, politicians, councils, housing, health, crime, education, shopping, cars, drink, think of this list and find somewhere where its not riddled with corruption...
