Dublin's next Lord Mayor may be pulled from a hat

THE name of Dublin's next Lord Mayor may be picked from a hat. The prospect appears likely as an existing two-year pact among councillors faces collapse, writes Louise Healy (Irish Independent).

It could be done by that tranny that does the telly bingo and I don't think your average Dubliner would be overly concerned if they were even aware of it.

Another reason to directly vote for our Mayor New York/London style. It would bring a bit more public recognition to the office and she or he would carry that much more weight as a result of direct election. To be honest, I wasnt even aware of the current Mayor until I read this thread and found out and I would obviously be more politically aware than the average punter (thanks p.ie!)

Any chance of the people of the city picking him/her?
Any chance of us looikng the pretensious "lord" from the title?
Any chance of the Mayor having powers over local crime, traffic etc?

    No?

    Clearly!

But seriously, Gladstones point above are valid - the office is to all intents redundant as far as the average Dubliner is concerned whilst it is being seen as a political football.

Absolutely, OD - Fine Gael have been in favour of directly-elected mayors, with proper powers, for years. But FF pulled the legislation.

There is also the minor issues of one member of the pact having held the others to ransom last year to ensure she got the deputy mayoralty in advance of the election, and the self imposed exile of another member.
