Does anybody know when the next boundary commission is due to be set up for the locals in 2009. Am I right to say there will be one in the lifetime of this government?
Should be interesting to see if the 3 seaters will last?

The next census takes place next year, 2006. It is believed that recommended changes will have to be enacted in 2007, which leads some to believe that the present Government will opt not to run a full term. Instead, it may be best to pre-empt constit changes and all the repercussions for campaign strategies.
The local boundaries are it appears much less likely to change. They tend to be sorta funny.
Also, the GE whether in '06 or '07 will take account of the changes in the 2002 census and will not need to take account of anything arising from the 2006 census as the data will be nowhere near to be to being collarelated by May '07. The revisions based on the 2002 census were only purposed in Feb '04.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

If the Local boundaries are not changed for the next Local Elections it would mean that they will have reamained the same since 1998 and for three Local Elections. Surely with the huge changes in Dublin anyway over that eleven years that would be totally unacceptable.
Are you sure there's a census in 2006? I know the last one was delayed, but isn't there supposed to be 7 years between each census?
Yeah, it's proposed to take place next year.Originally Posted by ryano

cllr, you might be the person to know. Who decides on the local electoral boundaries? it doesn't appear to be the responsibility of the constituency commision according to their site. Surely, the sitting councillors don't get to decide the new boundaries?

Even worse King kane it is the so called Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the Minister.
So, perhaps it will be the post 06/07 government? Or will the current minister get around to it before the election happens?

Census is every 5 years.
As the CSO website says:Commencing with 1841, censuses were held every ten years up to and including 1911. The ten year cycle was resumed with the 1926, 1936 and 1946 censuses.
Commencing with 1951 censuses have been held every five years. This five-year periodicity was broken in 1976 with the cancellation of the census planned for that year due to budgetary cutbacks. A census containing 6 questions was held in 1979.
The five-year periodicity was again broken when the 2001 Census was postponed until 2002 because of the foot and mouth disease situation at that time.
