The position of Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin is a historically and culturally significant position and should be preserved for ceremonial purposes. Where does this position lie in the new scheme of things? Who gets the mansion house? What happens during the paddys day parade with the lord mayors carriage?
    who cares, dump the lot.
What does the Irish President spend their time doing. Work in progress

From memory, on a visit to China in 2006, Ahern spoke how the mayor of Shanghai (I think it was Shanghai) had huge powers and he remarked how if he wanted a flyover or a bridge or a building, it just needed his nod and it was approved. Bertie marvelled at this lack of red tape. (If anyone can find the article on thsi, please post it)

The prospect of that man getting elected to a position of a mayor with sweeping powers to influence planning etc is terryfying.

    However, it is all academic.
Bertie Ahern's cremation as a political force will take place in just over 3 weeks time when in his own constituency his brother is going to be humiliated, possibly bringinging in a FF vote down as much as 80% on just two years ago.

Ahern's name is muck just as much (perhaps more) than Fianna Fail's itself.
The last remaining idiots who cling to the notion that this disgrace has some mythical popularity factor that can be switched on at will will get their answers in their tens of thousands of votes cast for anyone bar the Aherns in DC on June 5th.

It is my understanding that the position of Lord Mayor of Dublin, as well as the Cathaoirligh of the 3 other Councils will remain. I assume the Mansion house will remain his or hers and all cermonial duties for the CITY of Dublin will be carried out by the Lord Mayor.

The Mayor of Dublin will be a political post but also an executive one. I can't see the County Managers being set aside either. They will run the Councils on a day to day basis but will take direction from the Mayor on a range of issues. The Mayor will also be in charge of the DTA which will have massive powers on transport and planning

    Things are changing in Dublin.
