Could be very positive.

However, since all 4 Dublin local authorities are electing the Mayor, who will supposedly have very wide ranging powers,does this mean we can cull 4 County Managers, 4 local authority Lord Mayors and a plethora of duplicated positions?

It is good that the Greens are finally implementing something substantive (which I will believe when I see) but I note that Gormley stated on RTE that it would be better that the future Mayor have "a positive relationship with the Central Government"!!

A little like on TV3 yesterday he appealed for voters not to be angry at the Local elections or they wouldn't make rational decisions....ie vote for the Government....in his eyes anyway!

Finally, if the Government are still in office next summer, the opposition are odds on to win the Mayoral election. In that situation, I can't, despite all the will in the Green Party, see FF willing to share the stage with a hostile but very powerful figure!

I don't think it's fair or reasonable to add an extra layer of democratic representation and only apply it in Dublin.

If we're going to have a Dublin directly elected 'regional mayor' with executive powers, then we're going to have to have to roll this out elsewhere too.

Rolling this out is just going to leave people in Cork for example really angry about the fact that they're being denied the opportunity to reform their local authority and transport services.

Our second city could do with an exec mayor.

We would certainly have to look at more than just providing an extra layer of Government for Dublin and ignoring the rest of the country.

At the very least you could have an exec Mayor for Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick with regional mayors covering a broad area in the rest of the country.

I wouldn't bet on no Bertie. I some of his public utterances he actually comes accross as very (genuinely) deluded! I would venture he thinks everybody loves him. Sure wasn't it just a little clique in the meedja that brought him down))

Now this could be the longest discussed thread in politics.ie. Who will each party put up, for example will the Dublin MEP who fails to get elected run for this office, but like what some other people have said before it will be a thundering disgrace if the people of Dublin and greater Dublin give Mr B Ahern the honour of been the firstly directly mayor

Let's put aside the partisan sniping about who will get the job and focus on the most important part of this story - that is the Green Party implementing another one of their policies

And how many policies would that total then ?
I still bet it is a lower number than the number of ones they conveniently dumped

Not sure if true, but is the salary of said Lord Mayor going to be similar to government minister and also heard bertie interested ?

I suppose they will have to create a new office staff, setup a pr dept to give a few friends jobs and hire a driver, makeup artists, etc, etc.
All I see at the end of the day is more costs, so that some retired or failed politican can get another plush job.

I understand that this new position will be for all of Dublin (incorporating Dublin City, Fingal, Dun Laoire-Rathdown and South Dublin), but what will happen to the in situ position of Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin? Will this position remain alongside (and seperate) as an honourary position?

The position of Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin is a historically and culturally significant position and should be preserved for ceremonial purposes. Where does this position lie in the new scheme of things? Who gets the mansion house? What happens during the paddys day parade with the lord mayors carriage?

i'll presume there many other executive powers given back to the council in general and more ways to raise fund aswell as this.
