Why do we need a mayor elected by the voters in Dublin? What power would he or she have? Could a mayor overule a majority of the city council?.Could it be a pr job just like the presidency on a much smaller scale? It seems to me that local government has been hijacked by city and county managers, with the consent and support of the main political parties.A lot of decisions are now made behind closed doors by the manager and the party leaders without any real debate.Strange alliances are formed so that the paying jobs can be divvied up and previously held policies are abandoned in the"interests of the city".Nothing will change with elected mayors except the cost.It would be far better if the grinning clown Gormley did away with the blatent robbery that takes place every time a council decides to send some of its members to a conference. If councillors need a briefing on a particular subject it would be more cost effective to bring a speaker to a council meeting rather than waste taxpayers money on useless junkets.

We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

I ahve always been upfront on this Forum as to my identity. My name is Dermot Lacey and I am a Labour Councillor for the Pembroke Rathmines area. I have a long track record in Local Government and a commitment to same. My interest in this topic is twofold:

    1) I have campaigned for the creation of such a post for a long time now
    and
    2) I have indicated that if a contest is to take place i would be interested in seeking the Labour nomination.

The many reasons I have advanced for both can be seen on my website: Dermot Lacey

Cheers Cllr. Lacey, look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail.

My speculation has it that he'd be only interested if he thought he had a chance of winning.

I sincerely hope his hubris overcomes his political realism.

He'd look like a hedgehog on the M50 after a mayoral election.

    Ha, birds of a feather...

    Nice one cllr:
But former city Lord Mayor Cllr Dermot Lacey (Lab) says there is opposition to the new post from a 'coalition of Fianna Fáil backbenchers and bureaucrats' who want to 'stymie' Dublin.
You reveal yourself sir as a shallow-minded shill in the above statement.
I'm not a "Fianna Fail backbencher" *spits* or indeed a "bureaucrat" but I know a wannabe crony when I see one - by tarring me with these vile slurs (I strenuously oppose the creation of this Mayoral post) you have inadvertently revealed your true colours: a partisan pawn pawing for power and an ex-bureaucrat with recidivist tendencies.

Actually - probably a better guess than mine. But could Dubliners stick listening to that accent every day of the week for 5 years?

He needs Giuiliani-type powers to crush gangland kingpin scum. He should appoint and dismiss Gardai as in some US cities. Labour's undue concern for the civil-rights of criminals makes them patently unsuited to such a role. I recall Cllr Aodhan O'Riordan on Prime (I think last year) citing crime-rates as proof ASBOs don' work - despite only 6 (!) having been issued for the entire country. Dublin needs this kind of namby-pampy pinko-leftie liberalism like a hole in the head. A mayor should introduce internment of repeat gangland offenders and have powers to tap-phones and grant search-warrants independently of judicial-oversight to search premises of persons with serios criminal records in the area of violent-crime.
