Surely all the party's would want a 'name' on the ticket for the prestige and PR value of winning it for the first time, not to mention the high profile in the capital for the next GE.

    Hi YoungLiberal,

I ahve always been upfront on this Forum as to my identity. My name is Dermot Lacey and I am a Labour Councillor for the Pembroke Rathmines area. I have a long track record in Local Government and a commitment to same. My interest in this topic is twofold:

    1) I have campaigned for the creation of such a post for a long time now
    and
    2) I have indicated that if a contest is to take place i would be interested in seeking the Labour nomination.

The many reasons I have advanced for both can be seen on my website: Dermot Lacey

I have asked this before, why should other counties, or at least other cities/large areas, not get the same?
"Sea! Is féidir linne freisin!" Eamon Gilmore

"We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard." John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

I agree. If this office works, a similar one should be brought in for other major population centres.

Overall I'm all for real executive power being given to local authority, and the Dail taking a more legislative role.

Maybe they should and people should make that case. My view is that Dublin needs it.

What would the role of the proposed Mayor of All-Dublin be in the event of a similar bad weather next year?

    It's bs.

Where did this Mayoral proposal come from, anyone?

Think it is in the Prog for Government, know Minister Gormley published a white paper on it last year
The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites

Bingo: give that man a cigar.
And whose signature adorns that flawed document (prog for govt)?

Where do you stand on the issue of bin and water tax, privatisation of Dublin bus routes, parks, planning, community development projects and well, what other issues concern you that you think this position could or should hold control over?

Actually, when Dublin shut down last Wednesday and in the midst of all of the finger pointing and while the blame game was white hot, I was thinking "what if we had someone who was accountable to the public and who looked after this stinking mess and took it on the chin if something went tits up?". It's painfully obvious what will happen though - it'll be another faux pas and the Major of Dublin will achieve nothing. Maybe take some power from or give power to local councils.

Dublin had a Mayor for about 11 years. His name was Bertie.
