    Dublin City Council Budget 2006

Will the vote this evening on the estimates/budget for Dublin City Council be tight and will we even get a roll-call?

Last year we were told that 15 councillors voted against, but that has grown since. We are told now that 3 Labour councillors voted against, long with the 3 indos and the 10 SF councillors which would make 16, plus 1/2 FG councillors who are saying that they voted 'no' too.

Or is it all the usual bluster by people who have not desire to vote down the budget?
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

I understand that there will probably be a roll call (SF are indicating that they'll force one).
If only (those few) Councillors would realise that the bin charges are not a part of the Estimates and will go through regardless.

The City Manager sets the waste collection charges. The Councillors can huff and puff all they want, but it's not within their powers to change it.
You can thank Martin Cullen for that.

Gladstone you are correct the only victory that the Anti Bin tax brigade can claim is that they had the power to set and modify the Waste Service Charges transferred to the Manager. What a Coalition a FF Minister aided and abetted by a combination of SF, SWP, SP etc etc. My guess is that they will go through and I will be voting for one of the most progressive budgets that the City Council has ever introduced. Of course if we had a proper system of Local Government with corresponding finance raising powers it would be better but in the context it is a good budget and deserving of support. Of course those Councillors who vote against should subsequently be honest enough not to claim any of the credit for the positive measures contained therein.

I would welcome a roll-call, even only to ensure that the Hendrix agt the Isle of Wight or GPO, I was there scenario can be stoppped. 15 voted against last year, but 18 or so claim to have done so.

Also, it might be interesting to see who turns up. Will Madam Bonaparte make it for this one, can she bring herself to side with FG?

It would be nice if we could have a debate on the pros and cons of the full content of the DCC budget - not just the tired old arguments about the waste charges.

Cllr, any chance you could post the main points up?
It's alright to say things can only get better,

Looks like it all went off smoothly on the surface at least, the 10 SF, 3 indos and Emer Costello, John Gallagher of Labour and Bill Tormey of FG voted against. Which makes 16, and 30 were in favour, making a total of 46. So who was absent. there are 54 or is it 55 councillors and 8/9 couldn't make the meeting to approve the budget?

    Did Madam make it?
