Gilmore calls on Cowen to move writ on Dub Sth by-election

Eamon Gilmore has challenged the Taoiseach to move the writ for the Dublin South by-election when the Dail returns later this month. Deputy Gilmore was speaking at the special two day meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party in Clonmel.

regard to its handling of the economy, then surely it should put this to the test by having the Dublin South by election as early as possible.

“I am now issuing a public challenge to Brian Cowen. Move the writ for the Dublin South by-election on the resumption of the Dail to allow the
contest to take place by the end of October. Restore the full level of Dail representation to the people of Dublin South: put your record to an
    electoral test.

“I also want to warn Brian Cowen that if there is foot-dragging on the part of the government and any undue delay in holding the by-election,
then the Labour Party will be quite prepared to table a motion moving the writ to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Seamus Brennan.”

Has he had the selection convention yet? Or will they save time and go straight to the hat to pick their candidate? Like his Lenihan gibe it is empty soundbites without any merit.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know.

FF and FG drops in recent days. Nothing from anyone else. White might be resting to easily on his laurels in Lab.
No one else has a hope.

What a cheap and silly attempt to grab publicity.

Doesn’t it say a hell of a lot about the current doldrums of the Labour party that the two major statements from their parliamentary meeting were not on policy, but instead 1) saying that various people were out of their depth and 2) calling for this by-election

I know.. and it must be absolutely galling to realise that Fine Gael are going absolutely no where without Labour... or was it the realisation that Gilmore might actually have a back-bone and cut Fine Gael adrift for a few elections leaving it probably facing another 2002, that has raised your hackles..

Still on the subject of the thread... I think it is time that legislation should be moved to ensure representation as quickly as possible for the people of Dublin South and all other constituencies equally by laying down a maximum time frame that a bye election can be delayed for. I heard on the news today that some bye-elections in the past have been up to two years after a deputy has died and that is just ridiculous. In the meantime perhaps, the last person standing at the previous election should take the dead deputies place for the remainder of the Dail term... at least they could claim some kind of mandate from the electorate as being "the next favoured choice"

That would almost certainly be against the constitution, which has a number of references such as this:

The members shall be elected on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.

The "last man standing" - by any legal interpretation - would clearly have faced the PR/STV system and NOT been elected, so it would be constitutionally impossible to have then sitting in the Dáil making legislation.

This suggestion seems fair enough. The Constitution already sets a maximum 30-day limit between a dissolution and a general election, so it would be more than logical to set a limit between a by-election and the date that a seat was vacated

Wow Labour have been very busy at their think tank down in Clonmel

    1. Brian Lenihan is out of his depth
    2. Call the Dublin South By Election

Ah sure there must be something wrong with the water in clonmel for Labour to come up with these two radical statements

The Irish Times just happened to catch Gilmore sharing an umbrella with Alex White at their think-in in Clonmel.

Ah, but they're good at it

And they do need to be seen to be doing something to justify their >€100k taxpayer funded salaries.
