    Redevelopment objections to Brian Boru

I thought I'd heard it all, but this is just so nuts.

Dublin City Councillors are objecting to the redevelopment of the Brian Boru in Phibsboro. Not so strange on the surface, but some of the reasons given are just laughable. There are some reasonable objections re: the Dalcassian Downs apartment being overlooked and traffic concerns, but to say that this is the same pub as mentioned in Ulysses and should be preserved is nonsense.

It's a pretty big pub as it stands, and the interior looks like it has been changed since the days of Stephen and Leopold. And as for the comment that this is meant to be where Brian Boru camped before the battle of Clontarf. How is that affected by replace one pub with another?

The new pub will be accompanied by a large block of apartments, I daresay that most of the objections would be based on that. Also, what's wrong with preserving part of our literary history? Why do you hate James Joyce?

Why do you hate James Joyce?
    Stately, plump Buck Mulligan... etc.

    That's why!!

I heard that the statue of Joyce on North Earl St was initially objected to by councillors because Dedalus was 'bad to his mother' in Portrait of the Artist.

I'm not sure how true that is (the occurence of the objection on those grounds) but I wouldn't be surprised given the challenges facing some of our elected representatives.

There have been 7 objections and yes the locals are concerned about the height (though a 4/5 storey development would not be so bad given the height of the structure across the canal and the distance from the apartments in Dalcassian.

But the reps are running with the history side and that's just silly. It's not quite the same pub internally that Joyce was talking about. And having a new block there instead of the current one is hardly going to affect the possbility that it was the site of Brian Boru's camp one way or the other.
