Fingal Co Co disgrace themselves again

Fingal householders face €110 bin charge
    Tuesday, 20 November 2007 12:18
Tens of thousands of householders in Fingal will face a €110 bin charge from next year.

Fingal County Council says it is significantly extending its waste collection services and needs to recover its costs for what it calls an already heavily subsidised system.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Dublin City Council operate waste collection services with a flat annual fee.

Up to now, residents in Fingal only had to pay for the tag they placed on their rubbish bags for collection. Not any more.

The council's Director of Environment, PJ Howell, insistes the charge of €110 needed be introduced in 2008 to cover the costs of the expanding service.

He said the council's brown bin service, which looks after organic waste, will be expanded county-wide, while green bin collections will be doubled and will include plastics.

Mr Howell said there was a €6.9m shortfall in the cost of the service last year and, with an expanded service, additional revenue would be required.

Councillors and residents are to make their feelings known in coming days.

This is IN ADDITION to bin tags. They really are an utter disgrace - is there any County Council that is so discredited at this stage? That shows so little regard for the people they're supposed to represent? Just wait till the local elections to feel the backlash on this one.

Are you kidding me? Try Over €500 per annum in Sligo charged by a private company which effectively operates a monopoly. There are no waiver schemes in place for either pensioners or the unemployed.

There are no facilities on place for kerbside collection of recycleables (no Green or Brown Bins) and there are no bring centres to dispose of hazardous waste.

Because this disgraceful carry-on happens west of the Shannon nobodies interested or aware that his goes on.

But why should the Council impose a standing charge on residents. I agree with the bin tag system in that you pollute you pay but in essence someone who manages to recycle all their waste would still have to subsidise the council for picking up their neighbours waste.

Flat fees by DCC and others are ridiculous since they don't encourage any reduction in waste generation.

Proper order.. and its a disgrace that you've been getting away with it for so long.

    South Tipperary County Council

€235 flat yearly fee (tax deductible)

recyclable waste-fortnightly pick up, clear bags, 70c per bag tag

non-recyclable waste-fortnightly pick up, (alternate weeks), pay by weight

I know that SF reject the double taxation of bin charges, and I agree that these charges should be paid for, sorry are, in general taxation, but... when they are applied as a "standing charge", then they should be applied uniformly across the state.

It's a disgrace that because the major parties have to look over their shoulders in the cities, that they have been letting waste disposal be subsidised for years.

Though I was surprised that they chose next year to start the charge, as all they have done is given the SP an issue to campiagn upon, all over again in 2009.

    Pay your way..

There are no domestic rates so the council need to charge directly for these services.

It's a step backwards though, to bring in fixed charges. Fingal led the way, with a purely pay as you use service up to now, with free recyclables pick up. I think they should have just increased the bin tag charge.

Because this is effectively a new system, it's going to cost them to actually collect it etc. Can't see the sense in it.

How do we consider bin charges double taxation? Surely you are paying for a service? Unless some comrade is going to argue that having your rubbish collected is a 'right'? Thomas Paine probably overlokked that right. We pay car tax and I do not see Joe Higgins and other complain about double taxation.

As was pointed out to many who supported Comrade Joe, you have to actually firstly pay income tax for bin charges to be considered double taxation.

Thanks to PD progressive taxation policies (ie. less tax is more tax) the demographic of people who typically support Comrade Joe pay little or no income tax.
