    New Years Eve Dublin

I decided to risk it by going into town with my 4 year old son tonight at Christ church cathedral. Great athmosphere and great crowd. Needless to say the night was spoilt by 4 scumbags on the way back to the car on Aungier street. They threatened to bottle me and my other half in front of our kid if we didn't wish them a happy new year. This city is truly ************************************. We as law abiding citizens have no freedom to enjoy ourselves anymore. I despair what our country has become beset by liberal laws that allow clock work orange sinister scum on our streets.

Totally agree. The scene you describe reminds me of the movie "Men with Children" and sometimes I honestly fear we're going in that direction. The sad part is we have a wonderful city and country and it takes only a few savages to show its true ugliness at times. Be thankful you made it away safely but thats no saviour in so far that there is a bigger issue at hand. Early part of last year (Feb '11), I was attacked and held up at 8am one morning, three guys with knives and bats wearing balaclavas, they escaped with everything I had, but they were found soon after.

By Irish standards I dont drink, I'm having a stiff brandy 2 hours later trying to calm down. Threating me in front of my 4 year old child, I just can't believe it.

Have another. Its one of those situations out of your control, you become entirely helpless at the time. I had a knife jabbed into my neck and another into the rib cage, almost made it away but short by a second, they schemed me good. I'm not a presumptious type, but there's a strong chance drugs were'nt too far from the scene either. Hope your kid is okay, its a shock to the system alright, you'll feel off for a couple of days.

We have become a pretty fnucked up society. Essentially we have hurtled down the Anglo American road as fast as our nikes will carry us. Unfortunately, it hasn't been a good experience for a whole host of reasons. Experiences like the OP's is just one of those reasons.

I never even realised the lurking sense of menace and tension and fear on any night out in Ireland was there at all until I left, and suddenly it was gone. On any night out in Ireland when on the street, part of your subconscious is constantly on a state of high alert, scanning the vicinity for violent scumbags. You just never know when something is going to kick off. And it usually does. Here, I just don't have that sense of menace, that wariness, that expectation that some skanger will be flinging bottles about the place any second now.

Ireland is a pretty messed up place really. The dysfunctional abusive elitist society leads to vast amounts of underlying frustration and tension. But rather than lashing out at our "betters" and directing that anger and frustration onto changing the system, we are all brainwashed by the whisperings of "don't rock the boat, keep the head down, don't be making a show of yourself, don't be shaming the family" blah blah blah into just getting pissed and beating one another up instead.

Well, that's Dr Sidey's diagnosis anyway!

God help you. I guess it will be a tough one to explain to your kid, who has seen a side of life in the city that he should never have to encounter at that age.
