I hope you are not suggesting that there should be some form of reprimand for young people "out enjoying themselves" Irish style ????

To be honest, it is not just Dublin - but a lot of Ireland, at this stage.

No respect for themselves, and no respect for others.
Dublin, Europe's most supportive tourist destination for Peados, thanks to no electronic passport swipe in Dublin Airport. Ireland always facilitates child molestors.

Dublin City Centre, New Years Eve, 4 year old child - doesn't sound like a good combination to me.

Doesn't sound like a good combination in any city I wouldn't think.

And I don't suppose there were many gardai around either, as per bleedin' usual. Even in the 'boom' when money was being thrown at public services it was hard to find a garda at any time - apart from at the GPO.

    Sad but true.

The last time me and the missus stayed in dublin city, jervis street luas stop was like a scene out of some zombie movie, wall to wall with junkies, certainly wouldn't encourage you to return to dublin city centre.

    You're quite wrong there.
Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Brussels, San Francisco, New York, New Orleans and London are some of the cities I've been for new years and I wouldn't worry about bringing kids with me to any of them.
Cork and Dublin are two cities I certainly wouldn't bring kids into at that hour of night.

Fair enough... I haven't been out on New Year's Eve for years but when I was kids and families never really featured much wherever I was...

And of course aside from New Year's Eve, I've always felt safer walking around New York, London, Madrid etc. at night than I ever do in Dublin...

It's as if these days that junkies and alcoholics are considered part of the city scenery to be left to their own devices at all times of the day and night while gardai remain very thin on the ground if you can find any at all...

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've been out countless nights in Dublin City Centre to all hours and I've never had the slighest problem. I've never been threatened, robbed, attacked or anything and can't say I've ever really felt unsafe. I've seen a few fights between drunk people, but naturally you just keep your distance and of course loads of junkies, but they've never bothered me (and that's true during the day too) and that's been about the worse of it.

Yeah - have to say even though I don't feel particularly safe in comparison to other cities, I've never had any major problems myself either...

I have seen fights though, and plenty of them... and on a few occasions near riots... but as long as you keep your distance and don't look a*seways at the participants you should be ok...

Then again I pretty much know where to avoid in Dublin most of the time...

Same here. I'm a regular townie and can defend my own without a problem. However I'm very well aware of maurading gangs during festivals especially during Paddys night etc. I made the stupid mistake of bringing a 4 year old in with me which leaves you very vunerable to attack. Unreal but true. The sub human scum I encountered last night were drunk and maybe coked up. Track suits abound with large beer bottles at hand. I've been told by a resident from that area that there are well known scum elements from nearby flats that this is a regular run after hours.
Anyway lesson learned. I'm still going into town but wouldnt dare risk festival occasions with kids.
