DCC considers charging for use of the fire services

    This is just incredible.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...308219988.html

HOUSEHOLDERS IN the capital could be hit with hundreds of euro in charges for fire brigade call-outs if a proposal from Dublin City Council is approved.

The council is proposing to introduce domestic fire service charges next year, including a first-hour rate fee of €500 for call-outs to domestic fires and €610 for vehicle fires; and a €610 charge to attend a chimney fire. It also includes a first-hour fee of €610 for road traffic incidents.

The first-hour rate will be fixed and following hours are charged per tender attending. The council will discuss the plan at its annual budget meeting.
What manner of idiots adorn the Council?
Really, not only will you have the experience of your property burning down but you'll have to stump up cash if you want someone to come and put it out.

The one about the traffic accidents just leaves me speechless..

As far as I know similar charges have applied in the rest of the state for decades now. They certainly have in Galway. Most County Councils have a waiver scheme that is based on one's income.

Has the state an obligation to prevent you property burning down when usually except in the case of arson its your own neglect and or carelessness that is at fault? Why should taxpayers have to cover the cost of this?

It is a Dublin thing. They expect to get all these services like bins, water, sewage, fire service for free while the rest of the country has always paid.

They have done this in the UK for decades. The insurance companies pick up the tab and in cases of no insurance and real hardship they will usually waive the fee.

I've noticed this. They also seem completely oblivious to the fact that the rest of us have been paying for much of what they have gotten for free.

The waste one puzzles me a little in that those in Dublin seem to be paying more than I do in rural Galway for that service. We pay €24 per month to a private waste collector (no subsidy from the local authority).

There's a charge in Wicklow. It's covered by the insurance. I actually think the charge is covered in all car insurance policies too. They don't ask for it upfront, and I've no idea how hard the pursue if someone doesn't or can't pay,
