SP but he ran as an Independant because his Party affiliation would not have helped him inTempelogue. Although, Joe Higgins disproved that theory in Castleknock during the 1996 Dublin West bye-election.

I believe Higgins ran as an independent in 1996 and, knowing that he was going to get a seat, ran as an SP candidate in 1997.

I have just checked elections.org and Higgins ran as an SP candidate in 1996. Dunne if elected, may well become an SP Councillor.

Electionsireland.org shows candidates party affiliation, despite the fact that sometimes, candidates' parties aren't shown on the ballot paper because they aren't registered parties. Higgins would have stood as independent in both elections, because the SP wasn't a registered Dail party. It couldn't become registered until Higgins was elected.
