Re: DSW - Local Elections 2009

The person you are talking about is Mark Daly; he is the parties’ group leader in the council and continues to do a good job. I can’t comment on Lisbon as I was unable to tie-in to the campaign that often due to work commitments. But like many others I intend to make myself available to work for our candidates in the upcoming local elections.

I am not privy to the strategy in the two Tallaght’s at this stage and cannot comment on who is running and who is not. I think Mark has been an excellent candidate for the party, has a strong support base and if he was to run again I am sure he would be returned but I have no idea what his intentions are.

Under the leadership of the new chair who took over from yours truly after the last GE I think the party has taken big strides forward in its bid to retain and even make gains in DSW. I was out for pints with Sean Crowe on Friday and he seems happier and more energised than I have seen him in a long-time. I think the return to grassroots politics, which he enjoys most, has done him the world of good!!

I live in the St.Dominics Parish area, which would be a good voting area for SF and we have not seen or heard from your elected SF representative in over two years. He was not elected by the people of Tallaght Central to be a group leader but to represent us. Where is he?.

Mark holds a clinic in St Dominick's once a week, it is were our offices are located, and I think we are the only party to have an office in that area. When you say you havent seen him, can you explain that? Does it mean he hasnt been down for tea? He deals with many cases each day from that area and that is why he was elected with such a big vote last time out!! He may not do 15 masses a week and more funerals than the Massey Brothers combined but that does not mean he is not doing his job on behalf of those who elected him!!

No leaflet drops, no newspapers articles, no press releases, no canvasses from Councillor Daly (including the recent Lisbon Treaty Campaign) & no returned telephone calls. I have checked the Council website and he has submitted two questions for Council meetings in the last 18 months. Check the website if you doubt the veracity of that statement. If he is dealing with so many cases, why is this not represented in the amount of business he has submitted in the last 18 months?.

I also understand, but I cannot verrify this, that his attendance at Council meetings now only relates to the full-Council meeting and not the area meetings which deal with more local issues.

I do not expect my Public Representatives to call down for tea or attend the funerals of my next of kin (hopefully not my funeral) but I do expect them to keep me informed of Council issues either via leaflet drops or newspapers articles. Councillor Mick Murphy is more active than Councillor Daly on local issues and that is some achievement for Mick. I say that with reluctance as I am not a fan of "Rathfarnham Mick".

My guess is that Councillor Daly will call it a day but is holding out on till the last possible moment. Subject to next Friday's Boundary Report, this should leave the area open to Sean.

As I have said I disagree with you on Councillor Daly, as for the rest, well I just can ‘t comment at this time on what is an internal matter for the officer board of SF in DSW, I am no longer an officer of the party so am unaware what the strategy is at this time but no doubt we will hear about it in the coming weeks.

Just in case you think my thoughts are just an anti-Sinn Fein diatribe, from reading the local newspapers, I happen to think that your SF Councillor in Tallaght South (Cathal King) is one of the best and most hardworking of the Tallaght Councilors.

Speaking as a fellow republican, I have to disagree, brenners.

Re: DSW - Local Elections 2009

    wow....theyres a shock!........

joe neville is in a real dilemma..........

sean crowes decision is a simple one of tallaght central....... two safe shinner seats.......

karen warrens vote is split evenly in half...............

and who will ff run now?..............I presume rod smyth will be pushing hard on the grounds that he lives in fettercairn and is from springfield......but (as I posted above) will a smyth run bring in an oconnor on a independent ticket?

and that also scuppers the 'female' from old bawn that oc has been pushing

and of course theyres 6 seats...........

    My prediction:

    2 sinn fein
    1 labour
    1 socialist
    1 independent ff
    1 from green, ff, fg............

    fun & games!

Re: DSW - Local Elections 2009

I'm not gonna post a great deal on this thread, basically because those who know me here know that I'm reasonably close to the action, and it wouldn't be fair on the potential FG candidates across DSW for me to discuss party strategy here. All I will say is that in terms of the other parties, Labour's ticket now has a very lopsided look about it, with two candidates already chosen from the Templeogue/Greenhills end, and no-one as yet at the Tallaght end. And I haven't looked at the register figures yet, but I'd be surprised if there were more voters at the Templeogue end. For SF, I'd expect to see Daly go to Tallaght South, but it might just be Crowe on his own in Central - if he's being positioned for a 2012 GE run, they won't take the (admittedly small) risk of him not making it in 2009 - and if there is a second candidate, he or she will purely be a sweeper. For FF, I'm not really sure what they do - presumably Neville will want to run in Tallaght South, which means a strong, though slightly lopsided ticket of himself, Hannon and AN Other from the western end of the ward. In terms of Central, that would mean an FF ticket without a sitting councillor on it, am I right? Presumably Murphy runs in Central, with Daly and possibly AN Other from West Tallaght running for SF in South. What's left? Well, for Labour in South its presumably Jones and Corr again, with Eamon Maloney as well?
