You are correct about Burton - however the Socialist Party does not operate on the basis of personal fiefdoms. Joe Higgins and the Socialist Party/ULA will run as good a campaign as possible to get Ruth Coppinger elected.

Depends on how much of the budget has been leaked (the €100 household charge will not help)

It was a straight-forward battle between personal sympathy of the Lenihans and an anti- water charges vote. I can't see anything approaching the same sympathy vote this time and water charges could well be the key issue again by the time of the by-election.

Why would Joe Higgins not want Coppinger to run?
Sure there is but DW is not much more left wing as the poster said.

I still think Higgins give up the MEP seat to take the Dublin West when Coppinger would have taken and left Higgins to retake the MEP seat. Now they will lose the MEP seat. I can't help but think Higgins put himself first in the last election over the Party.

Is this the same Socialist Party that appointed Uncle Joe's right hand man as an MEP, ahead of Coppinger?

I can’t see anything but the FG transfers electing the Labour candidate.
It is very unlikely that the socialist candidate would get much support from FF.

Only a celebrity candidate could throw this contest off course.
