Richard Boyd Barrett - Surprise Candidate of the Election

In the last election, Richard Boyd Barrett polled 876 votes for the Socialist Workers Party. This election, he has stood on the People for Profit ticket and has achieved a stonking 5233 first preferences this time, putting severe pressure on out going Green Party TD, Ciaran Cuffe.

The question now is, can Barrett do it?

I think he might - if you think about it, he must have got votes from all over middle/upper middle class dun laoghaire, blackrock, killiney, sandycove - all along the coast - so why not get some transfers there too ? That is not to mention the estates etc where you would expect him to do well

As Kevin Keegan would say - I would love it if he beat them

what is 'people for profit'? some kind of ulta right free marketeer kenseyian party? Did they take votes from the PD. Remarkable, the PDs outflanked. Quite a personal conversion too.

the only reason he's got this number is the Baths issue. It would be bad if he knocked Cuffe out imo
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

It's people before profit a.k.a. (socialist workers party). Standing under the swp he would never have gotten that many votes. They have hidden the swpness very well.

n fairness i voted for the people before profit candidate in my area. didnt expect him to get anywhere but wanted to support him before finally having my vote go down to someone who would get elected.

maybe some of thats involved here.

that said he mustve done some work. cant be just a protest vote in this election. its far too polarised.

He has indeed done some work. He's the chair of the Irish Anti-War Movement and has a high media profile because of it. He is also the main mover in the popular campaigns around Dun Laoghaire seafront and the baths. Both of these issues, particularly the latter, are vote winners in Dun Laoghaire - as long as you aren't associated with scary, hard left, socialist ideas in general, or the SWP in particular. So, the SWP and even the fact that he is a socialist have been airbrushed out and instead Boyd Barrett stood as that nice, well spoken young man who is against the war and in favour of saving the seafront. Clever but, to be blunt about it, deceitful.

    Very well

His canvassers were the only ones that I saw any where in the vicinity of the local polling station. I wonder if they were 100 yards away?
