I had to stump up 500 and no I cant get to Dublin for the count which I would enjoy watching.
I would like to see the buzz there as by all accounts there should be a bit of excitement in that one.
It seems a lot of people dont like McDowell but he is in my view a much more able man than many of the other TD's including Bertie but perhaps thats why he is resented.
But then if JC himself got down off the cross in front of a lot of you I reckon you would want him back up on that cross quicker than the bishops.
Anyway I just wanted to raise the debate about the planning laws which I see as the cause of a great deal of the corruption and lack of inititive in this country because of the stifling effects of the bureaucracy and corruption they spawned not to mention the undermining of our republic putting the business of the whole country in the hands of that bureaucracy and politicians rather than in the hands of the business people.
We have three armies in Ireland. One army of bureaucrats in the middle who screw the army of workers and businessmen and stay on top of us by giving handouts to the third army of dossers and the really needy.

Looks like Noel is too much of a celeb for the wooden spoon race.
Cunningham in Longford-Westmeath looks to be the front runner with 24 votes.

Still waiting to see if Noel can do it in Laois-Offaly but the tally men have him at 39...

    Shouldn't that be rear-runner?

    dont mention it.
Considering that I was a candidate in the election and the fact that I am well known for the Dartmouth Square row with DCC I have to say that the electorate didnt know what my policy was other than relative to that land.

I was one of 106 Independants which made up nearly one quarter of the total candidates and together we didnt get even one per cent of media coverage. I didnt get a single minute of RTV or RTE or Newstalk or Today FM during the campaign nor a single newspaper story that outlined my policy as stated in another thread.
I got reports about the square and jail threats etc.
Cowen Bertie and McD and Rabbitte hogged the airwaves and the real opposition didnt get a word past this media monopoly.
Sir A J O'Reilly met the FF bosses just before the election and I wonder if that was just to give them a donation or a Rupert Murdoch style vote of confidence and support in his publications.

The independants are the real opposition between FF and FG who are both pretty similar as regards policy.
The media machine had frozen us all out of the debates and that is a fact.
Anyway I wanted to raise the debate about the inequity of the planning laws and how they have taken over our lives in this republic and I think I have done that now.
From now on that debate will grow and people will become more aware of how they have been tied up in red tape and their rights have been removed.
So while very few of the voters backed me they will get to know the issue as time goes by and that was my plan in going in the four constituencies.
The planning debate is now out there and it didnt cost me a fortune.
Looking at some others who spent 100 grand on posters and advertising in newspapers etc I think I did ok.
But I have to admit that I expected a few hundred votes in each area and to that extent I am disappointed and that should make some of you happy.

    Ditto, pretty much, Noel.

I made a last-minute decision to stand and maybe garner a little
publicity on behalf of children + fathers, and to subtract a few votes
from McD. I think I did that. I managed a grand total of 1,000 cards
through letter boxes and spoke face to face with maybe 100 people.
My 34 1st preference votes (32 from unrelated people ) represents
a fairly good return on speaking to about 100 people. At the RDS I
    saw quite a few mid-preferences, for what that's worth, but I wasn't
    counting.

Other candidates get elected on the basis of pathetic trite slogans
such as "Tough on Crime", backed by 1,000s of euro in publicity and
advertising and massive campaign teams. Obviously, some of them
also work very hard and do provide some good public
representation. I'm not sure how many?

And if I played a small part in subtracting 34 votes from McD,
which I think I did, then I have done something worthwhile I think.
And it was 2 weeks of very hard work. The website took about 2-3
days. I only canvassed on the doorsteps for 4-5 days. Not a bad
    performance, all things considered.

As a man, I'm sorry McD was jeered etc. and his wife and kids
too. But, even at the end he managed to botch his own exit. He
should have had his minions tightly surrounding him for a send-off
and shake Gormley's hand. He has ticked off so many people with
his policies and attitude. Thank God he won't be introducing any
more legislation for a long while, and hopefully never again.

    Go raibh maith agaibh,

    Peter O'Sullivan
