Blanchardstown Sinn Féin Councillor Felix Gallagher is supporting today's High Court challenge seeking to create a fourth Dáil seat for Dublin West. The constituency currently has a population to TD ratio of 31,000:1 leaving it under-represented under the constitution. The case is being taken by Dublin West constituent Feargal Molloy.
Cllr Gallagher said "We have known for years that Dublin West has been misrepresented with many of its previous representatives appearing at the tribunals. The census figures have now confirmed that it is also underrepresented. The 1992 Electoral Act gives the Minister for the Environment the power to fix any problem in relation to the election by ministerial order - including the Electoral Amendment Act, 2005 which could increase the number of seats. Regardless of any ruling today, the High Court cannot force Dick Roche to add an extra seat, only confirm that he has the power to do so. The reality is that the outgoing Government have little or no chance of taking two seats in Dublin West. Their motivations on all of this are based on self interest rather than the interests of their constituents. They would rather Dublin West was under represented than represented by an alternative party. I salute today's High Court challenge by one of my constituents and I pledge him my full support.
