Dublin City Council delays in motions.

For my sins I watched the live transmission of last nights DCC March meeting and it would break the spirit of a Guantanamo Prisoner but one thing that did strike me was that there were some councillors with motions waiting to be debated for more than 6 months. One motion I am aware of is one proposing that money/property which CAB take back from criminals be put back into the community from which it was pimped,I feel this is an excellent motion but because of the system in the council I may be dead before it gets debated.

There are three major problems. One is that too many Councillors submit "emergency" motions that are not emergency at all and we waste time debating whether or not to take them. Secondly too many Councillors fail to prepare for the meetings and raise issues that could easily be dealt with elsewhere and thirdly the fact that we only meet once a month - in my view in a City the size of Dublin there should be two meetings a month.

I don't believe that is the issue at all. Elected reps have a right to raise political matters in these Fora and I for one will defend their right to do so.

so you're defending their right to waste time on non-emergnecy motions, or ones that should be dealt with elsewhere?

It is a democratic chamber and all Councillors have equal rights. we usually vote down the irrelevant motions.

The Council would be much more efficient if the Councillors were working as councillors full time.

to the best of my knoledge the majority of city councillors have other jobs.

the notible exeptions are the Sinn Féin group, Independent Cllr and éirígí activist Louise Minihan, Independent Christy Burke and on or two other left wing independents.

The council is at best a glorified talking shop. If one meeting a month is not getting through the agenda their frequency should be increased, although no real change is going to come from parliamentary politics, However it is good as a symbolic platform such as calling for a ban on plastic bullets, or passing motions in support of striking workers such as during the dublin port dispute or like on monday night when 2 motions were passed in support with the Green Isle strikers who are currently on hunger strike.

It is also a good platform to highlight the uselessness of parliamentary politics under liberal democracy.
