Críona Ní Dhálaigh (SF) put down the motion and I heard there was a big clap when the motion was passed.

Well done to all the councillors!!!
It would be more practical to name them in Chinese. No one f**king speaks Irish! All this does is make life harder for the vast majority of people who don't speak this minority language.

I don't think so. I think the name you use every day just sinks into the consciousness after a while. A year, six months? You then use the name without thinking about it. As for understanding, most people say Tallaght, Coolock, Artane, Beaumont (in my case) with no idea of the history or the heritage of the name. You use it as a reflex. If you come from Tiffany Downs, you may not like the name but you will ultimately not really care. B

Dublin housing estates are mostly the remnants of big Anglo estates, long forgotten. When you grow up in Beaumont, you know you come from an area with a name, but the name itself is largely meaningless. No-one in Beaumont knows or cares who Lord Beaumont was or what he did. I would have preferred to grow up in an area that had a name that had some kind of meaning, and an Irish meaning at that.

If nobody speaks Irish then it is not a minority language it is a dead one. What about the thousands of people who do speak it? Do we not exist? You really are an embarrassing moron. Evidenced by your username also. You clearly have a thing about Enda Kenny.

Everyone who can speak Irish (which is sweet FA) can speak English. Residents should be allowed name their own estates and not have names they can't pronounce forced upon them by petty nationalists.

Jesus there are some people here who get their knickers in a twist about everything, this motion was passed by a majority of councillors who support the idea that any new developments in Dublin City built by DCC will be named in Irish from some of the posts here you would think the motion said that the first born child in these new developments should be beheaded. The children of the Gaelscoil in Cabra sent in a list of names they would recommend for future developments. Some posters here were saying that the people who move into these estates should have the right to name their own estate that's a fair point but at the moment you have to live with whatever corny name the developer decides on.Finally Darrach its nice to see Fine Gael allowing its supporters think for themselves.....not.

You know, I woke up this morning with a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart knowing that all new developments in Dublin will be named in Irish.

Suddenly the massive deficit, the rising unemployment and the bleak future we were all facing doesn't seem to bad any more.
