    Donegal South-West

Just wondering where people think we are in Donegal South-West.

Who is Fine Gael going to run? Will O'Domhnaill cause an upset at the FF Convention? Will Doherty take the seat?

Yes Doherty is going to take the seat. FG will run McGinley and possibly Barry O Neill. FF will run Coughlan and Gallagher of course. O Domhnaill's time will come.

Decent rep in fairness but he is in McGinleys patch. I would review my prediction of Barry O Neill as a running mate for Ciaran Twomey in Donegal Town. Apparently he signed a whole pile of new FG party members. Hey big spender.

Rumours are floating of a internal FF poll in Donegal SW that has Mary Couglan losing a seat. Found it surprising myself.

That would be a SF/ FF/ FG trio returned from this constituency.

Of course, Pearse Doherty is widely tipped here so 4 into 3 just will not go.

    Any takers. True or False.

ps. The same rumours have Jim McDaid losing in Donegal NE in another internal FF poll.

Of course FG is doing badly here. Donegal has 17% unemployment because of partition, so the neo-Unionist FG shouldn't be so surprised at its poor showing in this area.

Actually, those alleged polls show two losses for FF in Donegal. I would have thought that in Donegal SW, FG TD, Dinny McGinley was in danger from Doherty and SF but now it appears that Coughlan is most at risk.

FG surprisingly have a strong tradition in the border counties. Paddy Harte, Jim White, and now Dinny McGinley have represented the party in the Dáil from Donegal over the last number of decades.

True, FG in Donegal NE is clearly in decline. The traditional protestant electorate that they relied on has softened over the years and now votes across the board. What is also clear is that division is rife in the party in this constituency ahead of their convention.

All of that said, Donegal is going to very exciting this time with the emerging political strength of SF in the county and 2 three seaters, it will be down to hundreds and maybe even dozens of votes to decide the last seat in each constituency. Of course the Government will pour big money in to the county in 2006 to steady the ship but the sense of neglect has heightened amongst the people of the county. Change is blowing in the air.

Pearse Doherty will top the poll. FF will just edge FG out and hold 2 seats.

Its interesting that 3 out of the 6 Donegal TD's are all native Irish speakers. There could even be four the next time.

Where are McGinley, Coughlan and O Gallachoir from?

McGinley is from Gweedore, Coughlan is from down the south of the county somewhere and O'Gallachoir is from Dunglow area. And of three McGinley has by far the best Irish.
