Donegal CC cuts wage bill by 3% - sacks 71 frontlline staff, + how many managers?

    Er none, seemingly...

Donegal Co Council has confirmed plans to shed 71 frontline jobs as part of a cost-cutting move.

The workers have been told that their contracts will not be renewed when they expire.

The lay-offs are believed to have been prompted by a reduction in central government funding and a directive to the county manager that he must cut his wage bill by 3%.

No doubt typhoid Mary's supporters there will be lighting bonfires to celebrate yet another success for her.

All departments have been given this directive to cut wage bills by 3%. It is most likely that all contract staff in the Public and Civil service will not have their contracts renewed.

As you say the worker bashers will enjoy this.

Pro-rata around all the local authorities this could mean somewhere north of 2000 job losses in local authorities.

There are thousands and thousands more throughout the Public Service who are on fixed term contracts who will be affected by this.

    I don't see the problem ...

Surely if you're on a fixed-rate contract getting better-paid than those employees under normal employer/employee contracts, surely you can see there must be disadvantages to fixed-rate contracts - and that your time has come ?

I would guess no managers, unless they're also on fixed-rate contracts.

I don’t think fixed-term contracted staff in the Civil Service are being paid higher than their counter parts of equal status. There could be some anomalies but in general I think they are placed on the same salary scale.

It is bad news to lose a job, especially close to Christmas, BUT I have to say Donegal County Council staff are very reluctant to engage with the public.
eg The N3 from Ballyshannon to Belleek, a major cross-Border route, was closed with no warning. It was impossible to get any information from Donegal CC: phones were unanswered and emails ignored.
    My sympathy is limited therefore.

Thats only relevant if those who have lost their jobs where tasked with answering phones and dealing with your queries.

Shurely dealing with small local queries like that is what we have TD's for ?!
