It is not in her constituency. She is in Donegal South-West, the other Donegal constituency. Letterkenny is represented by Jim "Have a drink on me" McDaid, Neil Blaney and Joe McHugh (FG), none of them heavy hitters.

The dole in the Republic is a lot better than in the UK (its around 200 a week here but only about 50 sterling in the UK) If I was unemployed in Northern Ireland, I'd be on the bus to Letterkenny to sign on.

Well you could not do that as you would have to have been legally resident in the state for 2 years to be able to calim the dole.

That rule doesn't apply to Irish citizens - which the good people of Northern Ireland are. It also doens't apply to UK citizens.

Its fair tight alright. Most welfare payments are far lower in the UK. Pay during maternity leave is a fixed rate of £100 in the UK while its 100% of your wage in Ireland.

Don't sound surprised. In 2004 when the rate of unemployment in the 26 county state was as low as it could go (or near enough) the unemployment rate in County Donegal was 17%.

yes it does apply to irish citezens i know of a good few people who were travelling around the world for 2 yrs or more and when they came back they could not claim dole as they were out of the country for more than 2 years.
Also on liveline a few months ago there was a irish guy who had just come back to ireland after 6 years and he could not get any help from social welfare and he was homeless.
