Bad as FG are, FF are worse.

Defence expenditure is money down the drain. Just like house insurance.

I donít see any obligation in that to increase any spending.

Even if we tripled our defence spend we would only match Germanyís current low level that has Trump so upset but it would be a good start.

As a gesture of support for our european allies and solidarity against Trumps belligerence I think Leo should announce that we intend to join NATO and that we will double our defence spend with a view to meeting that NATO GDP target over say 10 years.

As Trump might phrase it Ireland cannot and should not continue to freeload on other freeloaders.

That said, they gave themselves 10 years to achieve the targets i.e. 2024 and we are six years away from that.

Three more countries will meet the target next year, bringing the total to eight countries. Obama and Bush have scolded European leaders many times about this and it was Bob Gates, the Defense Secretary who served under both of thems parting words to European leaders.

European NATO countries used to spend over 3% in the 80s, this had dwindled lower and now is about 1.5%. Only five countries meet their obligation, including oddly Greece.

In the Libya campaign, they ran out of munitions after just three months. When the Brussels airport was attacked by terrorists in 2016, Belgium had to acquire military gear for their soldiers, from who? The US of course.

For all Trump gets wrong, which is plenty, he is spot on about this but a bit more patience would go a long way.

Although in terms of Ireland, I'd like to see the DF expand to increase quality, state funded jobs, taxtake and pensions

At the Wales summit in 2014, the countries themselves "pledged" to achieve the target of 2% by 2024.

Definitely not, we should never again send our young people to act as sandbags for the lowlife scum of the European elite.
