I'm glad the emphasis is shifting to protecting the external border of the EU. Not since the Barbary Pirates has such criminality swarmed the Mediterranean as these traffickers and terrorists.

I personally think an EU Coastguard would be more effective and better equipped

That was classic. Even the tone of the newsreader didnt vary from the usual mournful dirge. Mind you all it will take is another overcrowded RIB and we will be back to square one.

The contradictions within the Leftist mindset are stunning.

They are enthusiastic about the Irish navy and others ferrying migrants from somewhere in Africa across the Mediterranean to the land of Italy.
They then insult the Italians for voting in large numbers for anti-immigrant parties in the recent election.
They seem incapable of making the connection between the two.
At least I hope Matteo Salvini sent his thanks to Leo and our government for the assistance Ireland provided in ensuring his victory.

The lack of intelligence and absence of coherent thinking on the part of Leftists gives me confidence that they will be destroyed politically in Ireland and elsewhere in Europe.

So where are they going to put these people when they take them off the boats? I doubt Italy wants any more and we are taking them from Greece. Hopefully we aren't going to be given quotas of these people.

Socialist support dropped to about 20% last time round.

But it's so easy, if you're a eurocrat, to go back to your large house and family in brussels, you don't see the problem close up. Then you wonder why all these new "populist" parties are popping up everywhere.

Now we face a situation where the navy rescues some guy from a boat and he may sue us in 5 years time for trafficking him into europe. He had a deal and was being trafficked, then they kept him as a slave, and it's all our fault for assisting the traffickers.

Such cases will go thru the courts, cost a lot, and clog up the system. When he wins / loses, the officials who "saved" him, and allowed him to be landed in europe and got him over here will not chip in a red cent for the court costs.

Yes folks its that time of the year again as the men & women of the Irish Naval Service depart for the Mediterranean once again to do their bit to ....

Well up to now to fish illegal immigrants out of the water and ship them to Europe.

But this Season there is a Sea Change and they will be part of Operation Sophia

The naval vessel LÉ Samuel Beckett has left for the Mediterranean to take part in an EU operation to disrupt human trafficking and smuggling networks there.
A crew of 54 members of the Defence Forces is taking part in Operation Sophia.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/munster/2018...-beckett-cork/

    Operation Sophia.
Operation Sophia's mission is to undertake systematic efforts to identify, capture and dispose of vessels and enabling assets used or suspected of being used by migrant smugglers or traffickers, in order to contribute to wider EU efforts to disrupt the business model of human smuggling and trafficking networks in the Southern Central Mediterranean and prevent the further loss of life at sea.

    https://www.facebook.com/DefenceForces

I do hope that this year they and their European partners play a more robust role in seeking out the People Smugglers lairs and destroying their vessels

    - and returning to shore those illegals caught in the act...
Had to laugh when I heard RTÉ say this. After being a taxi shuttle service for smugglers and their clients, the illegal migrants, our national Loingeas is now turning gamekeeper? Give us a break. A complete joke, the lot of them. From Emperor Merkel on down to the National Brainwasher and the hapless clowns in our navy.

Agree with you that it is a policy of the right wing to import cheap labour, but the biggest cheerleaders are the left politicians, Murphy, Coppinger, Burton, McDonald (SF), who are supporting Varadkar (FG) & Martin (FF) who are actually the ones in power.

Being stupid is not confined to either left or right in Ireland.

Three of the above are in the same constituency, so to gain some control over our immigration policy these three need to be got rid of in the next election by the so-called (by politicians) intelligent electorate.

Our Navy are a complete laughing stock/joke who got themselves involved in assisting illegal smuggling of undocumented migrants into the EU, and now for public relations are putting out the 'message' that they are now going to prevent instead of supporting these criminal activities. Complete morons led by morons.

We have been warning about this for years now, and the politicians have proven themselves to be incapable of listening to our concerns, and are definitely no longer representing their electorate on various EU issues.

And the media, politicians, never mention the elephant in the room causing crowding and extra work for the various public sectors and lack of accommodation - the influx of these same undocumented migrants - but the various services seem not to question why all this is going on - why is this?

Instead, multiple quangos are set up by the politicians to support this carry-on.
