Irishmen (soldiers, sailors and later on, airmen) have fought for and been paid by:
France
Spain
Mexico (fighting other Irishmen in the United States Army)
Chile
The United States of America (fighting other Irishmen in the CSA Army)
The Confederate States of America (fighting other Irishmen in the US Army)
The Boer Army of South Africa (fighting other Irishmen in the British Army)
The Imperial German Army in WWI (fighting other Irishmen in the British,Australian,Canadian, and United States Armies)
The Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War (fighting other Irishmen in Franco's Blueshirt Division)
The Fascist Army of Franco (fighting other Irishmen in the POUM Militia and International Brigades)
and in lots of armies in lots of conflicts since... they have joined, served and fought in the Armies and other arms of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, usually after they had emigrated there and those countries had become part of a Commonwealth force; or the US Army after they had emigrated there (esp Korea and Vietnam)
They have been in the French Foreign Legion fighting Algerians in North Africa and Vietnamese in French Indo-China.
They have been in the Spanish Foreign Legion fighting Riffs in Morrocco.
And these are just the 'official' armies. If you want to start on rebels we can go on to another page...
And if you look at it - in many of the above cases they were driven to do this by the fact that their own Country had nothing to offer them except poverty and hopelessness driven by corruption. So what's changed?
