Which is fair enough, but I presume their targets would be fishing trawlers being where they shouldn't be, drug traffickers and or people traffickers etc.

I don't imagine they'd be much use in a war situation, or that their use is proposed in a war situation...

Aye but if you are near international waters and you see a big kite up in the air, time to flee! Plus with drug interdiction at sea, the element of surprise is paramount.

Shut up, stick-monkey, and point it where the people who can sail tell you to.

    1) Modern warships have long range radar capable of seeing vessels up to 400 miles away, so the stystem is no advantage to them.

Lets hope the tax payer is not funding this nonsense.
That's a hell of a long range for a surface search radar......

    2) Time is money, oil tankers arnt going to faff around with a sail losing knots.

    3) In the case of the Irish navy, even if they track a vessel 100 miles away they dont have helicopters to intercept it, or the speed to catch up with it.

Lets hope the tax payer is not funding this nonsense.
I think the point is the sails would aid propulsion, so the sail wouldn't be losing them knots...

With the aviation industry clambering to adopt fuel saving measures by retro fitting their aircraft with winglets (at considerable expense) just to reduce fuel consumption by around 3%... then I don't see why shipping companies wouldn't be looking for similar savings no matter how small and as long as they're cost effective.

Who knows if this will work? Chances are it won't, but there's no harm in trying it.

Thankfully not everyone adopts your attitude... because if they did then f*** all would ever be developed.

All those people who spend their time dreaming up as many reasons as they can as to why something can't work or can't be done contribute f*** all to anything...

you do realise the average speed of a tanker is 12 knots!! so yes Kites are a plausible option considering the technological and design of todays latest kites.

before posting nonsense please do a little googling first to inform yourself

A freighter’s fuel consumption can be cut by 10 percent to 15 percent if a kite is used to pull the ship.

Why so negative? The Indians are engaged in muscle flexing with the Chinese. Our navy is looking at ways to save money and reduce greenhouse gasses while engaged in patrolling our waters.
