No way we could afford the running costs, even if we ddid decide to have realistic air defence.
The only old Air defence aircraft that ticks all the boxes would be F-5 E/F's upgraded provided we got a couple of hercs that could serve as tankers on occasion.
There are a few about, the Swiss are replacing theirs, as are a few others like S.Korea and Taiwan.
I do have a soft spot for the F-5 series though, always thought they were cool.

The only other aircraft in production now that would tick the minimum boxes are the S.Korean T-50 varient thats under development - which pretty much replaces the F-5 series in all its roles and requirements.

Better not let the Air corps have them anyway , they wouldnt know what to do with a plane that was only 30 years old .some old biplanes might suit that private flying club.

Apparently Uncle SAM has swooped in to save these condemed war machines.

US military to buy Britain's scrapped fleet of Harrier jets - Telegraph

Probably being bought as a stop gap for the delayed Joint Strike Fighter programme. I'd say the may well be used to train pilots rather than be deployed in a theater in Africa or the middle east.
