Indeed prohibition must be costing us an absolute fortune.I read about two guys today busted for about 70 quids worth between them. How much did it cost to prosecute them I wonder(two seperate cases)? You can grow some varieties of pot here too btw, even outdoors. 'Hollands hope' is good apparently.

You can grow it in your attic! All you need is some kind of heat lamps.

Stewie it is more than 20yrs since I smoked and am out of touch with what is available nowadays I am sure like tomatoes there are hardy outdoor varities available now. We have estimated that prohibition is costing 200 million euros per annum. There are higher estimations, almost double that but better keep to the most realistic.

My intrest in it is that I have a nuerological condition that is relieved by it and allows me to continue working. I am in no mind to hobble off to a backstreet dealer to score, nor do I particularily want to argue the point that it should be available just for medical reasons, when I start smoking again (I have tested it and was amazed at the results) I really want to see something progress in this country. There is so much wrong here, this is a small thing but maybe people will reach a level of knowledge about this and put pressure on the people in power to make much needed change.

I know I will never change the country Stewie but I will try to change something small like this. That €200 million could do so much for areas in this country that have been devestated by opiates, policing and prisons do not stop it, it can be controlled and contained. But first it takes an intilligent and informed debate about it and all the facts collected and anlyised.

So I am reliably told Design, but I am no way crawling into my attic to wire it up to grow cannabis, why should I? I feel I am doing no wrong if I start smoking again. I am not very green fingered I would rather buy it alongside my coffee and cigarettes, dammed if I am gonna grow them either!

Assuming the scenario where cannabis use was legitimised today. How would you go about rolling it out.

Since there is a smoking ban in place for workplaces it looks like cafe culture is out the window. What type of cannabis culture do you envisage for Ireland.

Also, what merits for a two step approach. Ie legalise cannabis for medical use under prescription first (dispensed by pharmacy) and as it becomes more prevalent in the society (like valium etc) go to full legalisation. It gives law abiding Irish businesses a chance to set up their supply chain.

Needless to say the current drug dealers have all their supply lines, supplier contracts and other logistics in place. I don't think we want to legitimise these people and reward them for being scumbags.

Interesting point, and the answer is great, it seems this problem was solved in the Netherlands by supplying customers bowls of dried herbs (flowers) to mix with the cannabis. The herbal tobacco is not illegal or harmful to smoke under the cigarette laws. One person commented on passing the Café's that a beautiful aroma came from them because of the herb used in the mixture. Café culture is still on the cards!

Personally I think a two tier approach is a mistake, double the time, legislation etc. Better to have it legalised in one go. The pharmacy's have enough, A Café distribution would create new places for tourists, and much needed jobs as well. It would have to be licensed and to reputable people.

You do make a good point though about supply lines, I am not sure of the answer to that and I agree about the existing ones being vague and underground. I will look into how the Netherlands and Portugal are dealing with this aspect of it and get back to you.

Fair play to the Guards, a nice 1 tonne seizure today, no doubt of the toxic and dangerous type of marijuana known as soapbar found on Irish streets, no doubt the Cannabis proponents will be angry but the Guards have done the youth and health service a big service.

People who really want to smoke Cannabis should take a holiday in the Netherlands where a liberal tolerated policy exists.

Do you have a link to that story? We were keeping a rough tab on how much was seized since we started the thread, first week was at over €11 million and almost all marijuana not soapbar which is highly suspect, another reason to legalise is to stop adulteration of an un-regulated substance.

    Edit: Got it here

I have no idea what it is worth, 1.1 Tons, am sure someone will clarify that on the thread at some stage.

Factory! I had never thought about factories producing it, makes sense naturally. 9 bars - 1.1 ton=1,100 Kilos so a bar is 122Kilos. pretty heavy, more in common with a bar of gold than a bar of chocolate.
