Willie O'Dea on the late late show chats about Haughey

Willie O'Dea was on the Late Late Show tonight. During his "chat" with Pat Kenny, he admitted that he had heard rumours of Charles Haughey's' financial dealings during his time as a Fianna Fáil TD and a member of the gang of 22 during the 1980's. He went on to say something like, if 10% of what he heard was true then it was serious. (that is not verbatim)

Is not part of his duty as a TD of this state to alert the Gardaí of any information that should come to his attention about any political corruption in the Dáil? He could have been instrumental in bringing down one of the most corrupt politicians this state has seen years before he was finally exposed!

Why did O'Dea not inform the Gardaí?

One other thing struck me - although having lived and worked in Limerick for a while, it didn't surprise me. When O'Dea claimed that under some statistics or other, there was actually a higher chance of assault or attack when in Dublin, the Limerick audience cheered heartily.

    Idiots.

Think you will find they cheered because he defended Limerick.

Do you know how childish this post is? Go do a list of politicians, journalists, etc who have said that they heard rumours about Haughey's wealth. Barroom gossip is not the sort of things gardai launch investigations from.

Yeah, that really was pathetic. Cause we're not really interested in reducing crime in Limerick, its just a big competition with Dublin. If there are 10 murders in a week in Limerick, it doesn't matter as long as there were 11 in Dublin. Gobsheens

Thats kinda the point I'm making - how pathetic it is for people not to care about how much gang crime and violence there is in their own city, as long as a local politician and government minister comes on and says "ah, sure isn't it worse in Dublin".

Actions speak louder than words. If he had outed Haughey the state might have been able to invest a bit more in Limerick by getting its hands on the avoided tax.

Was O'Dea afraid of Haughey? In fear of how going to the Gardaí may effect his career in Fianna Fáil? Maybe he was concerned how it would impact on Fianna Fáil at the polls. Did he put the party before the public?

I caught the end of the 'interview', just as the Willie and the Gun piece came up, and then the Dublin vs Limerick comments.

I lived in Limerick for a period over 20 years ago, in a house just up from O'Malley Pk. The crime centres of Limerick then were: O'Malley Pk and Moyross. Willie's party has been in power almost non-stop since then, and these areas are still the epicentre of crime. He admitted this on the LLS. Pity that Pat Kenny won't challenge people on TV the way he does on the Radio!

If I had information that was of use to the Gardaí in ensuring my community was kept safe, I would have no problem approaching the Gardaí.

If I was a TD, I could approach a senior Garda and not have to be worried about being taken seriously because of my position in the community. Give him the information, express my concern about this possible corruption and ask him convey my concerns to the appropriate senior Gardaí so they can conduct an investigation.

I would consider this to be the standard procedure for a member of the Dáil in a matter as serious as this. Do you not agree?
