Saddam to hang for crimes against humanity

Saddam Hussein, the former President of Iraq, has been sentenced to death by hanging for his involvement in the deaths of 148 Shia Iraqis in 1982.
The penalty was due to be carried out within a month, but under Iraqi law a death penalty automatically brings about an appeal, so it is likely that the case will be re-examined over coming months.

Yes, the hanging of this one dictator kind of puts it all into perspective, doesn't it?

Foregone conclusion, another fine example of "political policing"...

There is no doubt he was a brutal ruler, and I'll not be saying any novenas for him. But then, as is becoming increasingly clear, Iraq is such a divided society that brutal rule seems to be the only rule that can maintain itself.

America and Britain have merely undermined anyone's ability to take and hold power in Iraq. Killing Sadaam or letting him go is now irrelevant. The damage has been done.

    He deserves to die.

But this is a political Show Trial of an individual who both the USA and Britain supported during the War with Iran.

Indeed Donald Rumsfeld himself was sent over there to smoothtalk Saddam into letting the US support him - which he obviously accepted!

Even before the outbreak of that war the brutal nature of the Iraqi regime was know to anyone familiar with the region.

The mass gassing of first the Iranians and then the Kurds did not stop any western country from doing military and commercial deals with Saddam - incl. our own Government underwriting a certain beef baron's trade with the Iraqi regime!

If the trial had been held in The Hague, under proper international scrutiny, and not been a circus in the Green Zone, this might have some credibility. As it stands, it's a pre-election stunt.

Saddam would suffer much more by being behind bars for the rest of his days watching a successful Iraq grow and prosper. But there's little chance of any of that coming true. Stretching his neck won't help anyone.

A great day for the War On Terror.

I wonder whether this execution will be televised thoughout the world. Have RTE any plans to cover it?
