    Lower Standards

I was listening to Newstalk yesterday and this story is a clear indication that we(the public) expect and have lower standards than our european counterparts.

In Sweden there are two ministers that are most likely going have to resign or be sacked, what did they do?
well the first minister, there minister for culture has not paid her TV licsense for most of her adult life, and the other minister bought a small number of items in a supermarket and used her ministerial credit card and forgot to repay it. Both these miniters are going to lose their job. It must be pointed out that the public did not accept these standards and public opinion is that they should resign.

What do we have we a Taoiseach who accpted money in a capacty as minister for Finance, and lodged that money into his bank account and used it for his own personnal use. people said that we were the laughing stock of Europe after we lost to Cyprus 5-2, However I believe we are an even bigger laughing stock for this expectation that it is ok for poeple miniters to take money and lie about taking money and using it for their own personnal use.

As for the poll I was expecting it, Simply because of FF's propaganda campaign over the last few weeks, with Bertie's interview, FF filling up TV studios and clogging up radio stations, making people belive that it was public opinion. I will finish on this, that FF have got 39%, there is only one way to go from here and that is down, FF have peaked to early and will be on a decline until the next election.

The only thing your laughing stock nonsense points to is your feelings of inferiority about being Irish.

It was made as plain as is possible that Bertie Ahern was in Manchester in a PERSONAL capacity NOT as Minister of Finance. Now that leaves us with two possibilities, you’re either incapable of understanding basic facts or you do understand them, but are happy to misrepresent them, either way, you’re not in a position to lecture anybody. Maybe the people who were polled just don’t like hypocrites.

Just to clear this up once and for all, once you are appointed as a minister, you are a ministerwhen you, go to bed a night, wake up in the morning, go on holidays, go to the Dail,, give interviews or go to Manchester and do a Q&A at the end of a dinner and accept monies form influencial business men.

And to back up this point, I will use a Hypothecal example, Pope Bennidict, 13 years ago when he was just a cardinal went to a soccer game between Manchester Utd and Bayern Munich, after the game he went to the four seasons hotel, where there was an informal dinner with 25 woman, the then Cardinal at the end of the night did a Q&A session and as a thank you the woman who turned out to be a group of prostetutes, all had sex with the then cardinal. 13 years later this came into the public domain, and the pope accepted that it happened but denied he did anything wrong as he was at a soccer game in his personnal capacity and went to a dinner where he did not realise that he was going to be offered sex with 25 woman but accepted it never the less. If that story acually happened have a guess what would happen, I would think he would be impeached.

I don't feel inferior about being Irish, i'm proud to be Irish it just sickens me that we accept these low standards, the EU should set out guidelines for what is acceptable for public representitaves to do and they should be impossed on each country.

Thank God the Irish people do not act or think like the swedish people.

Have you ever been there? God bless Ireland and the intelligence of the Irish people.gfkp you are typicall of blinded anochists who never look at the facts and cannot accept the rights of the majority, you just wanted to destroy Bertie and any excuse will do.Read the facts and listen to the people
I about to qoute somebody that voted for FF in the last election, "the reason why I voted for FF in the last election is because I thought they would give us the Berti Bowl" That was off Newstalk yesterday, Thank god for the irish people, People like that should have their vote taken off them. As they clearly don't read the facts, and I can tell you one thing if that's the calibre of people, I certainly will not listen to them.

And to quote FF's friend De Valera "the majority have no right to do wrong"

Yes agree with the phenomenal intelligence of the irish people.

...total bullsh!t... but aside from that, 65% of the people could see that it was wrong to take the money. How do you want to spin that?

Which EU country's standards should apply across all member states?

French? Italian? Spanish? Greek? Portuguese? Slovak? Czech? Polish? German? Belgian? Even in Britain ministers who have to resign for ethical reasons end up getting plum jobs in Europe!

Corruption is the norm, you could add the US and Japan to the above list of less than ethically pristine polities.

Very true what did happen here would never have been allowed happen in Sweden. It's like that in all the Scandinavia countries and Finland to the best of my knowledge has the lowest level of corruption in the world. The simple difference is it isn't accepted there and hence it doesn't happen.

I think Italy is still worst then us and that’s it in Europe. We’ve fallen below everyone else. They’re hints of corruption in several other European countries it just isn’t as open as it is here and it isn’t as accepted by the people as it is here. This incident will also just make it worst because as you can see from this thread, it’s become clear that many people now thing it’s fine for politicians to take large sums of money from business and hence naturally more will do it. Sure why wouldn’t they, if they know they can get away it.

Being a Government minister is a job, not holy orders, get a grip man.

This Pope now, he seems like a sound man to me. I’m sure he’s a more rounded individual for the experience, he’d certainly be happier.
