For the third time in four days, the Government has had to suspend Dáil Éireann due to a lack of legislation to be transacted.
At 14:20 today, the Dáil was suspended until 15:30 as there was no further business on the Order Paper. The only piece of legislation considered today was the Second Stage of the Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2006 (Seanad) - an almost completely uncontroversial technical Bill.
Emmet Stagg, Chief Whip of the Labour Party said "If the government has so little legislation to bring before the Dail then there are many other items that it could and should be debating. For instance, the opposition has been seeking a debate on Aer Lingus for the past week, but the government has consistently refused to acceed to our request. The summer recess saw the publication of the three reports of the Morris Tribunal into Garda abuses in Donegal; the Barr report into the Abbeylara shooting; the Birmingham Report on the Dean Lyons Report; and the latest report of the Commission on E-Voting. None of these have yet been debated by the Dail, yet they raise issues of major importance that should be considered by the House."
The Dáil will resume later today at 15:30 when Oral Questions to the Minister for Defence and Matters on the Adjournment will be taken.
