RTÉ News: Man critically ill with swine flu

Well there'll be a lot more - I personally am one of the 40 odd confirmed cases of the Swine Flu in Ireland - myself and the Brother both caught it on a stag-weekend to Edinburgh at the end of the last month - note all to stag nighters going to Edinburgh and Scotland - its the number one area in Europe to catch it.

Was lucky enough - high temperature and the sneezies for a week after being quarantined by the HSE for the week - the tamiflu cleared it up in a couple of days so I obviously only got a mild dose - same for the brother- from the figures and the stats so far - being a chainsmoking, borderline alcoholic thirty something might actually be in your favour for some bizarre reason -its been the healthy 20 year olds who've been dropping like flies from this - also if you have had the normal flu anytime in the last 9 years - your immune system should be able to weather this version. Also the time you are infectious and capable of transmission is very short too.

Still - stock up on the antibiotics and think twice about snogging yer one at ten to 2 in the night-club car-park!

Why Antibiotics Cannot Cure the Flu

I cant believe some people still think AB will help them, in fact it has caused the effect of AB for genuine reasons to be allot weaker..
I too have issues with Antibiotics , particularly the fact that the more you use them the less effect they are and I would only use them as a last resort- but was told this by a very senior consultant/surgeon a few weeks ago and then the mother was told the same last weekend by a neighbour of ours, another doctor/surgeon who specialises in transplants - so, as the yanks say - go figure ? - Im not a medical person - but to have 2 eminent medical people saying to take antibiotics..............?

True, however I believe the flu can regularly lead to secondary respiratory related bacterial infections such as bronchitis, sinusitis and pneumonia etc
    Under Review.

Maybe - possibly could be something to do with the fact that the flu weakens your immune system and opens you up to bacterial infection- ie septic throat, chest infections etc etc - which if untreated might be more threathening than the viral infection itself?

If that's the case I'm home and hosed. Cheers Edo.

400 people die of normal flu every year in Ireland. Many of them ended up in hospital like this poor man. Yet you'll never hear about them. Less of the doomsday scenario please. It's a flu, with "the same mortality as seasonal influenza", according to Dr Darina O’Flanagan, Director of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

Practice good personal hygiene. Avoid crowded places if you can. Get a flu shot if you're worried. The usual stuff to protect yourself against any flu. It's not the black death we're dealing with fgs.
We all love animals. Why do we call some 'pets' and others 'dinner'?
