    The Best Irish Newspaper, Journalist

What is the best Irish newspaper? The most balanced, best written, most insightful of the few we have?

At better question would be, who is the best journalist writing on Irish affairs?

Best written for me is the Irish Times, Sunday Tribune being the best on a Sunday.

For international opinion pieces you can't beat the Guardian though.

Very difficult question, because the standard is low and falling - especially since the Indo dumbed down in the last couple of years. With Stephen Collins and Marc Coleman (aka 'Eddie Hobbes with Attitude') the IT is on a bad trend itself. The bulk of political coverage is over-hyped, snide and badly written trivia which looks childish beside the British qualities. The last thing you'll get from one of our lot is a bit of research allowing them to ask questions outside of the received wisdom.

I'd say Brennock in the IT is the best going, perhaps with Leahy in the SBP following up?

I agree completely, that's why it's so hard to pcik a journo, who's the best of a bad lot.

To quote John Stweart, "What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery".

I'd like to add McWIlliams to the "Only in Ireland" category

    They are all bad.

Though I usually read the IT on Saturday and might buy a copy during the week if a big story is running (like Lebanon).

George Hook on Newstalk 106 is pretty good. Don't always agree with what he has to say but he is pretty down to earth and robust.
