I just heard some radio debate and some examples of this today wherby people who were self-employed are first being refused job seekers allowance...then as a knock on of that they cannot access furhter education grants .....this is the first time I heard of this. Typical Bannana Republic stuff!!!

Yeah you are right on that.

Self employed people are being asked to sell the tools of their trade to live on, they are not entitled to the dole.
They are means tested if they have accumulated any assets ( this would be small machinery that is no longer on HP ). Thats exactly what they are doing.
I know of many who have gone to community welfare officer for help and St V de P.
It really is such a sad state of affairs

It certainly is as some are now already on the breadline and their families!! Not just that, but then as a result they are not being given access to re-training/FAS courses and one guy told that he was refused a small grant for futher education that he applied for as he wants to try use this "down-time" to upskill further but The authorities - CONTRARAY to what they have us believe, are actually putting a big stone wall in the way of this happening by refusing him the grant that is accorded to unemployed people generally, because he was self-employed before!

I think that if they made enough PRSI contributions (voluntarily ?) they are entitled to jobseekers benefit.
But if people are being told to sell off the very materials which might enable them to resume making money when/if business picks up....that is insane.

If you're self employed the rate of PRSI paid is lower hence the denial of job seekers for a period. They can't deny it to you indefinitely.

Personally, I think that if you can't avail of the benefit you shouldn't have to pay the PRSI associated with it but as we all know PRSI is just another form of income tax and has nothing to do with Social Insurance.

It is ridiculous and completely unneccesery. There is no reason why anyone in this country should be put in such a situation.

The only reason we are where we are is because of ignorance. Our politicians are ignorant ant the public is even more so. If we wanted to sort it out, it could be done so with ease.

The Governemnt needs to dramatically increase spending. We should be building the biggest windfarms in the world off the West Coast. we should be building new transport infrastrcuture throughout the country. We should be introducing local currencies and focusing on the local economy and agriculture. Small and medium businesses should be our complete focus; not multinationals. Everyone, man and woman, in the country should be given a dividend by the Government to increase their purchasing power.

We should not be borrowing a dime from anyone.

I did not know that applied to fas courses as well..Its just a downward spiral at the moment..
Self employed people pay the lower form of PRSI, in doing this it has restrictions. Penalised for working for yourself. No dental benefit, no subsidised eye tests. The list is endless.
There is no incentive for people to be self employed they are screwed in all directions.

The productive are been mauled while the whingers, dossers and complainers are getting every little whim satisfied. The SME's in this country are treated like a dogs ,great when they are preforming well but when things go bad they are cast out of the pack, and let starve, which is happening all over Ireland.

A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

Why not go to the health board clinics? They used to give payments to people waiting on welfare claims.
And Ireland, long a nation, be
    A province once again!

Afaik, the formally self employed can get Jobseekers allowance but not benefit. The former is means tested and the latter is only for employees who had been working for the past 2 years and the benefit only lasts for 12 months.

The difference between the two is confusing as they are exactly the same amount per week.
