    Maths question

Green gaffe fuels car sales storm - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie

Mr Boyle & Mr Cullen both live in a small island on the west coast of Europe. Mr Boyle is a politician. Mr Cullen is a car salesman.

Mr Boyle said one-in-eight people in the country were getting a new car every year during the boom years.
But Mr Cullen said it's one in 80.

    Who is right?

Not as cut and dried as the article makes out. Heard the interview live and it was all heat and no light.

Boyles point was that approx one in 8 people changed cars each year.

Cullen said it was one in 80.

Boyle apologised - prematurely it seems.

Cullen then referred to 200k of unit sales per year from a national fleet of 2 million.

Boyle said that was approx 1 in 8

    Cullen said whatareyouonabout - repeatedly.

The idea that 65% of the potential new car buyers in the country decided not to buy a car this year because of the tax changes is ridiculous. But that's what Bill Cullen believes. Mouth for another industry that believed its own bullsh!t. As for Dan Boyle - he needs to find his bearings very fast, and decide to sh!t or get off the pot.

A well to do friend was going to trade in his 08 toyota avensis for an 09 model.
The 08 cost around €28 k and the 09 around the same.
He was being asked to pay €16 k along with the 08 car, so he wisely decided to hang on to the 08 car.
Nothing to with car tax, everything to do with greed of car manufacturers.

And the greed of your friend to be fair....€16k is a bitter pill to swallow but that's what deflation has done to the residual value he can expect for the car. The new Renault Espace went on the market a while back for €38k, the previous model was selling at close to €50k so either Renault have decided to protect sales or the network in general (including car dealers) has swallowed its medicine. Don't get me wrong, I am naturally sceptical of car dealers, just that in this case there is visible pain being experienced now in the sector...for all.

Well it is debatable whether he is being greedy in seeking to spend money rather than keeping it in the bank.
It is rather funny in that he is a retired teacher..the new 'wealthy' in Ireland !

Both sides of a deal have levels of greed, I am not trying to insult your friend, just saying that the pain is being felt everywhere. Moving things forward will be down to who accepts the situation where it is and writes of sunk costs first. The dilemma is that he could probably get a much better car for a lot less (the acceptance of the car dealer to reduce prices and therefore, profit) but he is focussing on the €16k which he has already spent, i.e., someone else is not going to offer him more and cars in general are a depreciating asset (much moreso than houses ).

It would be appear to be 1 in 8 car owners who change their car each year (during boom years). Boyle took this as 1 in 8 people.

Don't know where Cullen is getting 1 in 80 people changing their car.

I don't see what either figure has to do with anything.
