    Ireland v. Italy,Ravenhill,August.

No interest in Rugby, but a friend of mine who has tells me an interesting one about this upcoming pre-season international.
According to long-standing tradition, the "home" anthem will be GSTQ. I understand that Eddie O'Sullivan has the boys learning the words already.

GSTQ would be the anthem alright, don't see why a sectarian out-dated monarchy should be feted in any way on this island.

Something to do with Northern Ireland being part of the UK, as overwhelmingly accepted by the Irish people ia a recent referendum.

    Just a guess.

Exact same as Northern Ireland Unionist rugby-players having to stand and listen to Amhráin na bhFiann in Landsdowne Road.

Anthems in general are divisive and serve no purpose.
Who would want green "one of the mob" ratings? Red and proud!

Good point Unicorn. It will be an interesting event anyway nonetheless. I can't wait for the BBC Northern Ireland coverage.

That better be a joke..... I expect any self respecting southern Irish player to remain silent during the GSTQ anthem.

Traditionally at northern events Danny Boy is played. In the 1987 world cup Danny Boy was played. At any event where the Irish government is not officially represented Ireland’s Call is played on its own. This was the case at the game against Rumania in Limerick some years ago.

What do you mean you expect any self respecting southern player to remain quiet for "God Save the Queen" ?

I'd expect any self-respecting Irish player to remain in the dressing room for God Save the Queen.

This Irish players standing for God Save the Queen might have been a nice little tradition when Irish rugby teams were made up of Ulster players and West Brit Leinster players, but I doubt for example, many of Munsters newly found rugby fans, will have much understanding for RoG, The Bull et al standing for this.

Would they be expected to face the Butchers Apron as well ?

I think you'll find they will.

Stuff like this is the price of unity.
