Hi guys, not sure if this is up already.
"A Fianna Fail TD has called on the government to support a controversial proposal by a Fine Gael counterpart to pay unemployed foreign nationals to go home.
Noel O’Flynn, a Cork TD, said he will be seeking a meeting with senior government officials to discuss the establishment of a voluntary repatriation scheme, aimed at removing some of the 80,000 foreign nationals from Ireland’s live register.
“Fine Gael had it right last year,” said O’Flynn, referring to a similar suggestion put forward by Leo Varadkar, the party’s enterprise spokesman last autumn."
Pay foreigners to leave, says TD - Times Online
A creative solution is certainly needed to reduce the social welfare bill. Unemployment is expected to hit half a million before the end of the year, with about 20% foreign nationals on the live register. We quite simply won't be able to pay for it all unless you have prohibitive tax increases or drastic public sector wage cuts and I don't see any of the main parties supporting that. Rent allowance as well as other benefits are going to have to be reduced or else reduce the amount of people on them. As Ireland's social welfare system is so generous, I am not sure if many foreigners will take it up but it is certainly worth looking at. It certainly isn't the time to play politics with this as Fianna Fail did when Varadkar proposed the same policy and Thomas Byrne said it was "a new low in Irish politics". that sort of PC bull we can do without. I am expecting something like this scheme to go through as with unemployment not expected to ease before 2011 we will have to come up with something.
