180 asylum seekers granted asylum in just one day

I just learned today, that a group of 180 Kurdish asylum seekers were granted asylum by our Government follwing a medelling request by the UN to take them in here to Ireland. They didn't even have to go through any application process whatsoever. Our Government just gave them the green light in a matter of hours. Wheres the outrage here?

They are said to be settling into the Ballyhaunis area in County Mayo. A town which has a Mosque built within it.

How far out of touch do people actually think this decision is with the peoples wish to cut the number of asylum seekers coming into the country?

This is great news. I am really happy for all concerned and their families. I wish them the very best of luck and hope they live long and prosperous lives here.

Happy for you. But what do the majority of Irish people think about this blunderous decision?

What is the reason for their asylum. From whom or what are they fleeing?
Isn't there a mini Kurdish fiefdom in Northern Iraq? Couldn't they get asylum there?

Well said! Though I would express hope that they have the choice to return to their homeland one day without fear of violence or death.

Ailish, any link with more info on the UN request? Presumably there was some UN procedure that identified the men as eligible for asylum under international agreements? That will determine if there was any blunder involved. I don't think the majority of irish people will be otherwise bothered.

Btw, to describe the UN as 'medelling' makes you sound like a scooby doo villain, better do some work on the PR...

Yet again, our Government has been undermined by outside agencies. If they asked our Government to accept 10 million regugees, would our Government still relent?
