    Irish cabinet expenses scandal

Did anyone see the headline in the daily mail today ?dont have a link and only read the 1st couple of paragraphs but the gist of it was that Hanafin was claiming expenses alongside with other senior ministers that have all ready been paid for.
Was in a rush at the time so if anyone can shed more light on it ?

Ministers accused of cashing in on expenses loophole - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie

Here's the story in the Indo

MINISTERS were accused yesterday of "cashing in" after embarrassing revelations about an expenses loophole.
It is understood several members of Cabinet continue to pocket expenses cheques for running a constituency office -- even though their constituency offices are paid for in full by their departments.
Fine Gael branded the system a "scam" and said it was typical of a "morally bankrupt" Government.
Every TD is paid an annual amount of €8,888 on top of a six-figure salary to support their costs in running a constituency office.
Now it has emerged that members of the Cabinet have continued to accept the payment, even though ministers also receive a general expenses cheque from their department each year.
Meanwhile, civil servants answer constituents' queries. The general expenses paid to ministers is €13,390 and both payments are made out as personal cheques to the politician.
    And here's an appropriate analogy

The runaway train went over the hill and she blew,
The runaway train went over the hill and the last we heard she was going still,
And she blew, blew, blew, blew, blew. [/FONT]

I would love to know how much in total our elected TD's are making off with.

Why are expenses not vouched for? Who created this system?

This should trump your Olwen & Hubbie claim!

In another embarrassing blow to his authority, Taoiseach Brian Cowen will now have to force through the pension cuts after failing to get the co-operation of some recipients.
If we take all the various small beers together we would find it could easily make a billion. Anyone fancy doing out a spreadsheet?

In the OP article we are talking about €9,000 approx multiplied by the number of ministers (30 ?). That makes a good start.

Oh, and by the way, our newly elected TD for the inner city is hanging on to her teaching job. She learns fast!!! Two state salaries.

Minister in England get sacked over this. In Ireland thay are admired.

Fraud is seen as a good thing here.
Time for the Irish Goverment to do the honorable thing and go. If thay have any honour left.
