Lawyers estimated to earn €400m from child abuse scandal

Legal fees to account for €400m of €1.4bn child abuse bill - The Irish Times - Sat, Jun 13, 2009

It is estimated that legal bill could account for €400m of €1,400m resulting from child abuse compensation. How is this figure (which represents 28.5% of total) arrived at?

N.B. No child was EVER represented in any District Court in Ireland by ANY solicitor during the lifetime of the Industrial Schools. It is believed that only one family EVER had their case reviewed by the Irish Supreme Court. Story of Evelyn

Many people had the impression that the Court's decision in the Doyle case would also free all the other children who were forced to attend industrial schools. They were mistaken. Source

This seems to me to be completely indefensible but maybe there is someone on this site who can justify it. Lawyers are often paid to defend the indefensible, could any of them defend themselves and their fees in these child abuse cases?

It's not enough to say they simply charge the going rate. That's a circular argument.

    its simple.

who makes up one of the biggest cohorts of day job professions in the dail ?

very easy to demand millions when the minister for finance is a lawyer, the taoiseach is a barrister and completly in line with what macdowel did when he set the wages for these lads as minister for "justice" for the LAST load of tribunals.

christ half the opposition is in the same trade too so dont expect a change in the gravy train off them

the only way you'll see drastic cuts in areas like this and medicine is when a tescos shop worker is calling the shots, otherwise known as never.

its the kleptocrasy in action lads, and its all nice and legal so sit back and be amazed at the brass necks.

I thought Lenny was the barrister and Cowen the Solicitor. I could be wrong.

Can anyone give me a clear and rational explanation of the bloody difference between solicitor and barrister, or is it all just smokes and daggers designed to keep as many lads as possible on board the gravy train?

Abuse really is big business. The abuse lobby is probably being funded by the legal profession who stand to gain big money from the exchequer for processing claims.

And meanwhile, the Irish economy is on its knees with big tax increases on the way again quite soon.

I heard a man (RTE radio interview last week) who had been abused as a child say that the Law Society had a lot to answer for and "had their hands in the pockets" of the victims. He was quickly cut off by Mary Wilson, the interviewer. (Is she a lawyer herself?) Personally I find it obscene that solicitors have become millionaires out of this. The upshot of this is that more than the total amount provided by the orders has gone to solicitors.

While the millions were being made, people going to the Redress Board were told it would be a criminal offence to speak about what had happened to them at the Board. People will remember that Michael O'Brien tried to kill himself on his way home from his hours of hostile legal questioning in front of the Board.

Outrage. THe whole thing is an outrage and we are no way near to seeing "redress".

no, your right i got em backwards.

    sorry about that.

the gas thing is when you look at cowan is he's pretty much came from all the main FF stalward professions.

the Da was a publican where brian worked when he was younger , who then went into auctioneering so theres the property connection and now brian himself is a solicitor.

all we need is for one of his kid to become a teacher and the other a doctor and youve got the whole gammut of dail professions in one family

your not going to get radical dail reform from this bloodline.

That money was our money. It belonged to the citizens/electorate and is now being handed over to solicitors and any tom dick or harry who alleges abuse. E1.4bn is equivalent to E1000 for every taxpayer.

You have to hand it to the lot of them. They have played a blinder.
