E-Voting: Commission to withhold clean bill of health

The Sunday Times claims that the report of the Commission on Electronic Voting, due to be delivered to the Ceann Comhairle on Tuesday, will recommend that the system should not be used in its current form.

THE Irish government will come under increased pressure over the controversial €52m electronic voting system with the publication this week of an investigation into its accuracy and secrecy.

It is understood that an independent commission will say the system cannot be used in its current form, and will outline a number of necessary changes. This will mean further tests and delays, while the e-voting bill rises by almost €1m a year.

The commission’s report, to be given to the ceann comhairle on Tuesday, points to the current international trend of having a verifiable paper trail with electronic voting systems. The Irish one currently cannot supply this, which means voters can have no guarantee their selection is recorded by the machine.

Great news. I was beginning to get worried that Bertie & Dick Roche had seen a sneak preview of a report, given their talking-up of eVoting in the last few weeks.

That's good news. Having some experience of the interaction between consultants and the state I can't say I'm entirely unsympathetic to the government on this one. Basic truth is they don't have the expertise, and clearly got caught up in the 'digital era' hype fed to them by the media etc. On the other hand I'd have hoped even politicians would have a basic mistrust of a system that wasn't transparent and verifiable.

It's a terrible waste though and to my mind perhaps the worst example to date simply because it sought to fix something that wasn't broke. But that's hype for you.

So is it not time now to get rid of these bloody machines. Looks obvious that even if e voting could take off it won't with these machines anyway
